📈 Aston Villa v Lille Form & Tactics

Aston Villa have stumbled in recent weeks, and their most recent defeat against Man United was yet another blow in their top four hopes. Unai Emery’s men have now lost each of their last three Premier League matches on the spin, meaning Liverpool have closed the gap on them to just two points.

Villa have, however, been convincing in the Europa League, and have only failed to win one of their nine matches so far. That was against Go Ahead Eagles in October, and Villa racked up 2.82 xG in that game, while conceding just 0.83 xG from the hosts, so it was an unfortunate result for them.

Lille’s league form has been a complete contrast, and they were able to bounce back from that midweek disappointment to beat Rennes 2-1 on Sunday night. That result has lifted Lille up to fifth in the Ligue 1 standings, following a run of six games unbeaten.

The French side have been less impressive in Europe this season, and they were fortunate to scrape through the league phase with their record of four wins and four losses. They required extra-time to beat Red Star Belgrade in the playoff round, so this clash against Aston Villa was always going to be a tough matchup.

📔 Aston Villa v Lille Formation & Team News

Benjamin Andre was an injury casualty from the first leg, and he was absent from the matchday squad at the weekend, so he is unlikely to feature here.

Ayyoub Bouaddi should start in midfield alongside Nabil Bentaleb in his absence. Matias Fernandez is likely to feature out wide midweek, to allow Giroud to lead the line, with Hakon Haraldsson in an advanced midfield role.

John McGinn was fit enough to make his first start for Villa since recovering from his injury, and he could start again if deemed fit enough. Emi Buendia, however, hobbled off late against Man United with a knock, which means there could be a reshuffle for Villa in advanced areas.

Ross Barkley scored Villa’s only goal at Old Trafford, so he could keep Douglas Luiz out of the starting eleven here, while Lamare Bogarde should continue at right back as Matty Cash nurses a calf injury.
