Liverpool v Chelsea Cheat Sheet
Liverpool v Chelsea
Saturday’s early match-up features a showdown between Liverpool and Chelsea. Despite a rocky start to the season for both sides, this game could have a major impact on the rest of their campaigns.
Liverpool, who recently advanced in the FA Cup by narrowly defeating Wolves, will be looking to rebound from a tough 3-0 loss to Brighton. The Reds remain in contention for the Champions League and aim to secure a top-four spot in the Premier League. They’ve also acquired new player Cody Gakpo, giving them optimism for the second half of the season.
Chelsea, on the other hand, are facing even greater struggles. Manager Graham Potter’s initial success at Stamford Bridge has waned. His side are drifting further away from Champions League qualification and making the top four this season looks to be a step too far.
Lewis Hall has been thrust into the first as Chelsea deal with an injury crisis. Hall has been favoured by Potter over the summer signing, Cucurella. The youngster has featured in four Premier League matches and has done reasonably well. He has been deployed as a left-back in a four-man defence and as a wing-back in a five-man defence. Graham Potter could opt to play him in either role on Saturday. He will likely have more opportunities to venture forward as a wing-back but he has managed a shot in all of the matches he has started at left-back. Hall is averaging 1.6 touches per game in the opposition box. In comparison, Andy Robertson averages 1.73 touches in the opposition penalty area.
Hall has had at least one shot in his last three Premier League matches. He is averaging 1.37 shots per 90 minutes across all of the matches he has played in the league. 50% of his shots have found the target. The defender still marauds up the field against stronger opposition. He had a shot when Chelsea played Man City in their recent league match. He has also featured in two FA Cup matches for Chelsea.
Konate and Matip will likely form the centre-back pairing for Klopp’s side. Virgil Van Dijk remains out with an injury he picked up in the defeat to Brentford. This means that Konate is likely to provide the aerial threat from set-pieces. Since Van Dijk was injured (including the Brentford game where he was subbed at halftime), Konate has had a shot in three of the four matches. The exception was the FA Cup replay against Wolves where Liverpool took an early lead. The Frenchman is averaging 1.13 shots per 90 minutes played in the Premier League this season and winning 36.4% of his offensive duels.
Konate has started two games against Chelsea for Liverpool and has had a shot in both of them, the most recent of which coming in last year’s FA Cup final.
Hakim Ziyech was known for his tendency to shoot at Ajax. The Moroccan international has a fierce shot and he isn’t afraid to test the goalkeeper form distance.
Ziyech put in a solid performance in his team’s win over Crystal Palace. He earned an assist and managed to have a shot on target before being substituted in the 89th minute. He has played on the right hand side in both Chelsea league matches he has started since the World Cup and had a shot on target on both. In this position, he is able to cut inside onto his stronger foot and this lends itself nicely to our shots-on-target bet.
