📂 Man City v Liverpool Cheat Sheet
📈 Man City v Liverpool Form & Tactics
Man City should return from the international break with plenty of confidence, having secured the first trophy on offer for the season before the two week hiatus, with a 2-0 win in the EFL Cup final over Arsenal. The EFL Cup is not always taken seriously as a major trophy, but it does correlate with future success - many managers in the past have seen the EFL Cup as a springboard for the bigger trophies.
This competition means a bit more for City at the moment than it does Liverpool. With Pep Guardiola’s side crashing out of the Champions League to Real Madrid before the international break, City are now only competing on two fronts, while Liverpool have to manage an extra few games in the schedule, having battled past Galatasaray to set up a clash with PSG in the quarter finals of the Champions League.
Arne Slot is under quite a bit of pressure at the moment, and the international break came at a good time for him just to quieten the noise a little ahead of a massive end to the campaign for Liverpool and the Dutch manager. His relationship with the fans has always been a bit fractured, but it’s now getting close to toxic, with many not happy about the current style of play.
That being said, Liverpool can still have a strong end to the season with the club in the quarter finals of the Champions League, as well as being in the race for a European finish in the Premier League and potentially reaching the semi finals of the FA Cup. I think Liverpool will target the Champions League from this point, which may mean that you see quite a rotated side fielded by Slot for this clash.
📔 Man City v Liverpool Formation & Team News
Man City haven’t really nailed down a set identity this season, which is why they’ve been quite inconsistent by their standards throughout the campaign. Guardiola has toyed with a 4-1-4-1, as well as a 4-1-3-2 in recent weeks - though the tactical shapes probably are not as important as the style that City play with.
Guardiola has made his side more physical, direct and athletic this season, with this shift moving in line with the general direction of travel in the Premier League. You can see this with City’s spine - Donnarumma, Dias, Rodri and Haaland are not really ‘Guardiola players’, showing how he has adapted to the different demands of the Premier League.
Arne Slot hasn’t been as willing to make this change, he’s been a bit too idealistic in my view of what he wants to see from the Premier League. He’s been quoted numerous times this season complaining about the style of play, or set pieces, in the Premier League this season - but these grievances should be saved for fans, not the manager of Liverpool, who is trying to win football matches.
Liverpool should set up in a 4-2-2-2, Slot has been packing the midfield in the second half of the campaign after Liverpool were being torn apart in the early weeks of the season with a more aggressive, front footed style. Slot has returned to control since then, though this has blunted some of the explosiveness we saw from Liverpool last season.
You always thought Liverpool would score at least twice when watching them last season, which isn’t the case this campaign.
