📈 Liverpool v Sunderland Form & Tactics

Sunderland completed a remarkable remontada against Bournemouth last time out. After going two goals down within the first 15 minutes, the Black Cats fought back to equalise shortly after half-time. Just as he did against Arsenal, Brian Brobbey made a massive impact from the bench, as he scored the winning goal in the 69th minute. That result means Sunderland still have their unbeaten Premier League home record intact, during which they have pulled off some impressive results. While a trip to Anfield is usually such a daunting task, Sunderland have every reason to be confident given their recent form.

The Reds have looked a shadow of their former selves this season, and they have lost back-to-back matches at Anfield coming into this clash. Results haven’t even been close either - Arne Slot’s men lost 3-0 against Nottingham Forest, who are battling near the bottom of the Premier League standings.

PSV were also clinical on the break at Anfield, pulling off an impressive 4-1 win in the Champions League. Liverpool were able to fashion some good chances, but they just lacked that clinical edge in the final third, which has been a theme over the last few weeks. The Reds currently sit eighth in the league standings, having lost six of their 13 top-flight matches.

📔 Liverpool v Sunderland Formation & Team News

Arne Slot opted for changes at the weekend, with the most notable absentee being Mo Salah, who was an unused substitute. Dominik Szoboszlai featured on the right wing, with Joe Gomez offering more defensive security behind him. Florian Wirtz returned to the starting lineup to feature in an advanced midfield role, while Isak led the line. The Swedish international was replaced just eight minutes after scoring his goal, as he continues to have his minutes managed, so Hugo Ekitike should start on Wednesday night.

Regis Le Bris hasn’t been one to rotate much this season, and he will likely stick with the 5-4-1 shape, which caused Arsenal problems. Trai Hume can expect a recall to the starting eleven, with Nordi Mukiele slotting into a back three along with Dan Ballard and Omar Alderete. Granit Xhaka and Noah Sadiki have formed a solid partnership and midfield, while Wilson Isidor should lead the line once more for the Black Cats.
