Man City were involved in a nine-goal thriller at Craven Cottage midweek (5-4 win), and the Citizens were barely able to hold on to the three points, following a late onslaught from the hosts.
Pep Guardiola will be hoping for a more regulation win against Sunderland, although that promises to be no easy feat, given how strong the Black Cats have been this season.

📂 Man City v Sunderland Cheat Sheet
📈 Man City v Sunderland Form & Stats
After finding themselves 5-1 up after 54 minutes, Man City took their foot off the gas against Fulham midweek, and allowed the hosts a route back in. It wasn’t quite the typical Man City performance, and they had to soak up plenty of pressure in the second half.
In fact, Fulham saw 66% possession, and conceded just three shots. Luckily for Man City, they were just about able to hold on, despite Josh King being denied by a Josko Gvardiol clearance off the line right at the death.
Sunderland had a similar midweek experience, as they registered just 32% of the ball, but it was always going to be a tough test for them at Anfield. After taking the lead through Chemsdine Talbi, it looked like the Black Cats were on track to cause a massive upset, but a Florian Wirtz shot took a wicked deflection off Nordi Mukiele, and beat Roefs.
Still, Sunderland can take immense pride from their courageous performance, and the fact they currently sit sixth in the Premier League standings as we approach Christmas. The Black Cats have lost just three of their 14 top flight matches this season, and have been a real surprise package.
📔 Man City v Sunderland Formation & Team News
Against Fulham, Pep Guardiola opted for an unchanged 11 to that which beat Leeds last weekend, and once again they delivered three points. However, neither of those results have come in the most convincing of circumstances, so City could make some changes at the weekend.
John Stones replaced Nico Gonzalez against Fulham, and is a potential candidate to start in midfield. Savinho will also hope for a return to the starting 11, although, it’s unlikely he replaces Jeremy Doku - the Belgian registered an assist midweek, putting in another masterful performance.
Sunderland opted for a more defensive lineup midweek, with Trai Hume introduced to the starting eleven. The Black Cats set up in a 5-3-2 formation, with Brian Brobbey drafted in to lead the line over Wilson Isidor.
Regis Le Bris is likely to opt for a similar setup against Man City, given how Sunderland have taken points from both Arsenal and Liverpool when going with a more pragmatic game plan.
