📂 Sunderland v Man City Cheat Sheet
📈 Sunderland v Man City Form & Stats
Sunderland have only lost four of their 18 matches in the Premier League this season, which is an incredible record for a newly promoted side. This record tells us that the Black Cats can be really stubborn, and are rarely a pushover - especially when playing at the Stadium of Light where Sunderland are yet to lose a game.
Regis Le Bris’ side are one of only two teams in the Premier League, the other being Arsenal, that are yet to lose at home this season. They’ve scored 16 goals across their nine home games, so Sunderland have been carrying an attacking threat in their matches in front of their home fans and have claimed big scalps as well - beating Newcastle, as well as holding Arsenal and Aston Villa to draws.
Manchester City have definitely found their rhythm again and you can tell from the mannerisms of Pep Guardiola. The City boss went over and cheered the travelling support after City’s 2-1 win over Forest last time out and you get the feeling that the decorated manager is up for this title clash against Arsenal, and potentially Aston Villa. City have won their last five matches across all competitions, notably winning three of these games to nil.
Guardiola will still want his side to tidy up things on the road, they’ve been strong in their recent away games against Forest, Palace and Real Madrid - but there is still an air of vulnerability about City’s backline on the road which has been exposed a few times this season as displayed by the 11 goals that City have conceded away from home this season.
📔 Sunderland v Man City Formation & Team News
Sunderland lined up in a 5-4-1 shape against Manchester City at the Etihad a few weeks ago, which was an understandable approach with how dominant City can be at home. However, I’d be surprised if Regis Le Bris went with this set up again, Sunderland have had far more success in their 4-2-3-1 shape this season and now that they are playing at the Stadium of Light, there should be a few more opportunities for Sunderland to get forward.
It is worth noting that Sunderland are missing key players from the squad due to AFCON. The most notable absence is Noah Sadiki who has formed a formidable partnership with Granit Xhaka in the middle of the park. Sunderland don’t really have another profile like Sadiki in the squad, so we could see someone like Geertruida play in midfield here, or see Le Bris give Chris Rigg another opportunity in the Premier League.
Manchester City only have two players that are missing due to AFCON in Marmoush and Ait-Nouri - but neither of these players had starring roles in the current City set up anyway. City did lose Oscar Bobb to injury recently, who joins Doku, Kovacic and Stones on the treatment table. City’s incredible depth makes these losses manageable, as their recent winning run shows.
Guardiola has been lining City up in a 4-1-4-1 shape this term, with the development of Nico Gonzalez allowing City to manage games a lot better. The fullbacks also have been important to City’s turnaround this season, with O’Reilly and Nunes offering consistency in areas of the pitch which were constantly exposed by City’s opponents last season.
The developing relationship between Cherki and Foden is a joy to watch at the moment. Cherki has retained the flair which makes him such an exciting player to watch, and has worked well with Foden despite many thinking that the duo would be competing for the same starting spot in Guardiola’s side when Cherki initially signed.
