Manchester City are on the back of their greatest season in history. They matched one of the most impressive achievements ever in English football by winning the Premier League, FA Cup, and Champions League all in one season – the Treble. The only other side in English football to do this was Manchester United back in 1999.
Following up on such a great achievement and continuing the momentum is almost more difficult than the achievement in the first place. Man United were able to win the league title the following season after making little changes to their squad. The only players they spent money on were Mikael Silvestre and Quinten Fortune.
City have already shown a different approach as they’ve signed Mateo Kovacic from Chelsea in a £30m deal to replace the departing Ilkay Gundogan. This has been the only business done by the Cityzens so far, but it is likely that we will see at least a couple more new faces in sky blue next season as well as a few on their way out.
In this piece, we will be looking at the Man City transfer odds for this summer and evaluating whether there is any betting value.
Josko Gvardiol to finally secure City swap
Since last summer, Josko Gvardiol has been on the radar of many top clubs. Chelsea were keen on signing the centre-back and approached RB Leipzig before being scared off by the price. Now it’s Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City who are heavily linked with signing the Croatian.
They are currently favourites to secure his services, in fact, according to the Man City transfer odds he is the most likely player of anyone to end up in City colours. On Paddy Power, he is 1.04 to join City with the second favourites Chelsea at 19.0.
He is a signing that will come at a massive cost, City have already had an approach of €75m plus add-ons rejected by the German club who are holding out for a record-breaking offer of €100m. Manchester City will most definitely be able to afford this fee but they’re playing hardball with Leipzig.
Journalist Fabrizio Romano reported on the 9th of July that Man City had scheduled a new round of talks with RB Leipzig. Usually when a second round of talks goes ahead a deal will be finalised.
The real question is, how will Gvardiol fit at Manchester City? He is known for his gritty yet composed approach to defending while having a cool head on the ball. He is in the top 99 percentile for passes attempted in the top five European leagues. This is a crucial stat for a Guardiola defender. They adopt a system in which they progressively play out from the back, John Stones and Ruben Dias are both fantastic on the ball and both complete a high volume of passes per 90. Gvardiol will be able to come in and play in either of the two’s roles with no discernible drop-off in quality. He will be a great fit.

Is Cancelo’s City career coming to a close?
In the 2021/22 season, Joao Cancelo was one of Man City’s most important players. He was a key part of the way they played, he provided goals, assists and created plenty of chances. It came as a huge surprise to a lot of football fans when his role in the team came under question at the beginning of this season.
This led the Portuguese international to join Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich on loan with an option to buy. The Bavarians chose not to activate the option, leaving Cancelo looking for an alternative way out. According to the Man City transfer odds, Cancelo is closest to signing for Barcelona or Arsenal.
Both clubs would be great fits for the full-back, Arsenal are lacking real attacking full-back options aside from Zinchenko but with the imminent arrival of Jurrien Timber it looks like Cancelo could be Blaugrana bound. His odds are 2.5 on Paddy Power to join the Catalonian side. City are reportedly looking for £60m for their man and with Barcelona’s financial woes it remains to be seen whether they’ll pull this one off.
This said, Cancelo’s future at City remains uncertain and Barca are still the frontrunners to bag the signing. You can back this bet via the link below.
Is a Laporte departure on the cards?
Aymeric Laporte has been a mixed bag for Manchester City since he signed back in January 2018. He is clearly a phenomenal player, but injury troubles have always held the Spanish international back from his immense potential. He has been injured for a whopping 442 days since 2018. He is simply unreliable. With the options City already have in the centre-back department being so strong and with the potential arrival of Josko Gvardiol, it looks like it could be farewell for Laporte.
He has been strongly linked with a move to Juventus but with their current situation, it seems they would have to sell someone before bringing someone in. Juventus are in no way the most attractive club in 2023, last season they suffered a points deduction due to financial breaches and have subsequently been excluded from European competition. This has led some of their important players to be linked with moves away.
Laporte is currently 2.88 to join Juventus and 4.33 to resign for his former club Athletic Bilbao.
Pep to strengthen midfield with Veiga
Gabri Veiga has been the subject of a lot of speculation this summer. He is off the back of what has been his breakout season at Celta Vigo. He helped the club avoid relegation and is now after a new challenge. Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool have all been linked with a move for Veiga but it’s Man City who hold a commanding position above those in the race.
After waving farewell to Ilkay Gundogan, City were always gonna be in the fold for a midfielder of a similar archetype. It seems they have filled this position with Mateo Kovacic but this wouldn’t stop Pep from launching a bid. Veiga has been described as a Cesc Fabregas 2.0. He is incredibly gifted on the ball and would suit the City system well.
The only major hurdle in City’s pursuit of Veiga is Paris Saint Germain, they’re the only side with more chance of signing the midfielder according to the Man City transfer odds. They are 1.85 to secure the services while City are 4.0. If you fancy backing Viega to City, click the link below which will take you directly to Paddy Power.
