  • The Riverside Stadium is a sell-out for this match - this is a relatively rare event for the 34,000-seat capacity ground, although this season’s average home attendance is the highest since the 2016/17 Premier League season for Middlesbrough

  • A win for Millwall would move the Lions above Middlesbrough into second place

  • Millwall have never played in the Premier League, with the Lions’ last season in the top flight being in 1989/90

📈 Middlesbrough v Millwall Form & Stats

There are two very different sides to the coin of Middlesbrough's form. They aren't playing badly at all; indeed, Boro have won the xG battle very convincingly in their last seven matches in a row. The issue has been that they have failed to convert too many of these performances into victories, winning only two of their last eight matches, and have not won in four at home.

It has been a finishing issue as much as anything else for Middlesbrough. Under Kim Hellberg, chances and expected goals have continued to make chances. They are averaging 1.87 xG per match under the Swede, but they are only scoring 1.67 goals per match and have drawn a blank in seven of Hellberg's 24 league games in the league, almost a third.

Millwall’s points tally since the beginning of 2026 can match up to anyone in the league, and their most recent performances show that they continue to be in good form. Not many teams have come away from Portman Road with any points this season, and despite a poor first half there, Millwall emerged with purpose and drive, and they could've potentially won the match.

Millwall's away record needs discussing. Aside from an away defeat to top of the table Coventry, they are unbeaten in seven other away matches to the rest of the top ten, winning four of those against Hull, Wrexham, Watford, and Norwich. For a club that is more readily associated with an intense home ground and positive home form, this is significant.

📔 Middlesbrough v Millwall Formation & Team News

Middlesbrough are likely to be missing captain Hayden Hackney for this fixture. He has a calf injury, and though there has been no confirmation of this of late, typical injury timelines should suggest that this type of knock requires a longer spell on the sidelines.

There are also issues elsewhere in the team with regard to international players. Aidan Morris and Riley McGree are having to rerun from long flights.

Hellberg has been a flexible tactician, so it is not easy to predict shape and tactics, but he could return to a 3-4-3 shape here. Luke Ayling, Dael Dry, and Adilson Malanda would make up a very strong back three, with Callum Brittain and Matt Targett locks for the wing-back roles, but the front three and middle two are up in the air.

Millwall are likely to be more settled. Alex Neil prefers a 4-2-3-1, which can press in a 4-4-2 out of possession.

There is the potential for Neil to name an unchanged XI from the match against Ipswich. This would mean Josh Coburn leading the line against his former club with Macaulay Langstaff in behind.
