Newcastle Stats: Howe hunting for goals
Newcastle United are heading into their second full season under the management of Eddie Howe, but it’ll be a tough task to out-do what they did last season. Newcastle conceded the joint least amount of goals in the 2022/23 campaign (33), the other side to concede this little was champions Man City.
The issue for Newcastle was scoring, they scored 69 last season which is in no way terrible, but if they added 15-20 more, they would be challenging for the title and not just the top four, which will ultimately be Eddie Howe’s long-term goal.
Newcastle haven’t added much goal threat to their ranks with Harvey Barnes being their only high-profile attacking signing but having Alexander Isak from the off will be huge for them. Isak averaged 1.36 shots on target per 90 in the league last season. Barnes averaged 1.13 which puts him in the top 87th percentile of wingers/attacking midfielders in the Premier League. This is a marginal upgrade on the 0.88 per 90 that Allan Saint-Maximin contributed last season. He has since left the club to join Al Ahli.
Aston Villa Stats: Villa to bring more aggression?
Aston Villa have huge expectations on their shoulders heading into this season. After qualifying for Europe and spending well in the transfer market, Emery’s side will have a lot of eyes on them.
Villa have added Youri Tielemans on a free from Leicester, Pau Torres who worked with Emery at Villarreal for €33 million and highly rated winger Moussa Diaby for €55 million. They are also linked with Galatasaray outcast Nicolo Zaniolo. Villa director Monchi signed the Italian midfielder whilst at Roma and is in talks to do the same again.
Villa have also managed to keep hold of their star men, their only notable departures have been Ashley Young on a free to Everton and Marvelous Nakamba to newly promoted Luton Town.
Last season Villa averaged 11 fouls per 90 with Douglas Luiz, John McGinn and Emi Buendia being the main culprits. The three will be likely be battling against Joelinton, Bruno Guimaraes and Tonali who are all known for fouls. Expect the midfield battle to be tasty.
Newcastle v Aston Villa Cheat Sheet
If you’ve never heard of the Cheat Sheet, it’s super simple to understand and will help give you an edge when it comes to picking bets. Essentially, the cheat sheet provides you with a collection of stats for a given game. In this case, we have the Newcastle vs Aston Villa stats to share with you.
The Cheat Sheet is split in half to make the Newcastle vs Aston Villa stats that bit more digestible. All of the major elements of the sheet will be broken down in this article.
🎯 Newcastle Offensive Stats: Isak leading the line on the Tyne
Alexander Isak is set to be a crucial man in Newcastle’s 2023/24 campaign. The Swede missed 13 matches last season due to a hamstring injury but still managed to hit 23 shots on target from 49 total shots. He averaged 1.36 shots on target per 90, second only to Callum Wilson at 1.46 who played significantly more matches.
This is the best shot-on-target percentage of any Newcastle player. Wilson was Newcastle’s main striker for the majority of last season and has a great relationship with Eddie Howe. We still expect the former Bournemouth striker to be involved for Newcastle, just in a potentially more limited way.
🎯 Aston Villa Offensive Stats: Emery looks to Watkins
Ollie Watkins is a phenomenal player, it’s clear to see. He scored plenty of goals for Brentford during his time there and he’s continued this trend at Villa, with last season being his best yet. He managed 15 in the league along with six assists. Watkins had 45 shots on target last season, an average of 1.30 per game.
🛑 Newcastle Defensive Stats: Tonali to test the waters
Newcastle United were known for their poorly disciplined midfield last season. Joelinton accumulated 12 yellow cards alone last season and his fellow countryman Bruno Guimaraes picked up seven. New signing Sandro Tonali is also known for his aggressive nature and he picked up 11 cards in all competitions last season.
Tonali also committed the third most fouls in a Milan shirt last season, with the ref stopping him a total of 35 times. He is priced at 2.4 here for two or more fouls. In a new league, he’s bound to get frustrated and commit a few fouls, especially up against both Douglas Luiz and John McGinn.
🛑 Aston Villa Defensive Stats: Cash a banker for fouls?
Matty Cash committed 1.04 fouls per game last season. He will be facing off against either Anthony Gordon or Harvey Barnes who are both very quick, sharp and effective on the half-turn. Upon examination of Cash’s fouls, a lot of them are made upon his opposing winger receiving the ball on the half-turn.
Villa will be defending very compactly and Newcastle will be looking for ways to get through their defensive line which will lead them to look to the wings.
