Liverpool head to St. James’ Park for the 4:30pm kick-off on Sunday afternoon, where both teams will be going all out to win. The hosts are coming off the back of a 1-0 away defeat to a Man City treble-winning team. The Magpies were not convincing stats-wise however, creating just 0.29 xG, taking only two shots on target, and winning no corners. However, the prior week against Aston Villa, Newcastle battered Unai Emery’s men 5-1, having a staggering 13 shots on target.
Liverpool’s campaign has got off to a slightly stronger start, as they have accumulated four points from a 1-1 draw with Chelsea, and a 3-1 victory against Bournemouth. In the latter game, Liverpool dominated in all areas of the pitch, racking up eight shots on target, ten corners, and having 65% of the ball. It is safe to say that both Newcastle and Liverpool have the potential to do well this season. Liverpool have not lost this match-up since December 2015, but Newcastle are a different side than they once were, with lots of new signings. Just this season they have acquired Sandro Tonali and Harvey Barnes to bolster their squad.
In this article the Newcastle v Liverpool Cheat Sheet will be broken down, highlighting the key stats and matchups ahead of the game on Sunday afternoon. There are plenty of betting angles for this game, with both sides looking on strong form.

Newcastle stats: Can Newcastle turn around their poor form against the Reds?
Coming into this game, Newcastle will be hoping to win two out of three of their first games of the 2023/23 season, for the first time since their 2011/12 campaign. However, their recent records don’t look hugely convincing to do this.
The Geordies have only kept two clean sheets in their last 20 Premier League appearances. Further, since Eddie Howe took over as a manager, two of the four defeats he has suffered in his 34 home matches have come against Liverpool. The Reds are something of a bad luck charm for Eddie Howe.
On average, Newcastle’s opponents racked up 1.15 xG last season, meaning that they were, on average, expected to concede a goal every game they played. In hosting Liverpool last season, the Magpies conceded twice, faced seven shots on target and seven corners. Furthermore, they have only managed to keep a clean sheet against Liverpool once in the last ten years. With the Reds in high goalscoring form, averaging over two goals per game this calendar year, they are likely candidates to score on Sunday. They are priced at 1.16 to score at least one goal.
Liverpool stats: The Reds average over six corners per game
Liverpool averaged 6.16 corners taken per game last season, the third-highest in the league. In the back end of last season, since January this year, Liverpool’s average only rose to an impressive over 6.3 corners taken.
In their two games this season, the Reds have recorded an average of seven: picking up four against Chelsea and ten against Bournemouth. In addition to that, during both games against Newcastle last season, Liverpool managed a total of 20 corners: taking 13 when playing at home and seven in the away fixture. Both times they had the most corners in the match. Liverpool to take five or more corners, and repeat history, is priced generously at evens.
This being said, Newcastle aren’t shy of a corner themselves, taking the most corners in the league last year (averaging 6.92 per game). For this reason, the combined team corners also look like an attractive market for this fixture. Over 12.5 match corners are priced at 4.50 – which happened in both head-to-heads last season.
🎯 Newcastle Offensive Stats: Isak leads the way in Newcastle shots
Alexander Isak has been strong for the Magpies this season, bagging twice in their opening game against Villa and earning the Player of the Match Award. Last season the Swede managed to score ten goals from just 22 starts, combining for an average of a goal involvement every two games.
Isak managed to average 1.36 shots on target and 2.9 shots per game across these 22 starts, also being put on penalty kicks alongside Joelinton. With Newcastle’s new signings offering creativity up top, these stats should only be on the up for Isak this year.
To register a shot on target against Liverpool he is priced at 1.20 – a great selection to add to a bet builder. Alternatively, you can back the Swede to be involved in a goal at evens.
🎯 Liverpool Offensive Stats: Salah looks to be on strong shooting form
The Egyptian international took an average of 1.23 shots on target and 3.31 shots last season, according to the Newcastle v Liverpool Cheat Sheet. Also being chosen for penalties and some direct free kicks, Salah is the prime candidate for shots on Sunday afternoon.
Salah has a great track record against Newcastle too, assisting a goal and taking a shot on target in their last outing, and assisting two goals in their other game last season. The latter saw him win a Player of the Match Award as well.
So far this season Salah has been involved in two goals, averaging 1.5 shots on target and four shots per match. He is definitely not shot-shy, and you can back him to pull the trigger for three shots at 1.57. Alternatively, for him to be involved in a goal he is priced at evens.
🛑 Newcastle Defensive Stats: Midfield duo have been carded in both games this season
Last season, when you thought of Newcastle yellow cards, Joelinton and Bruno Guimaraes sprung to mind. However, with the former doubtful to start on Sunday afternoon, there is another midfielder who will be playing alongside Guimaraes: Sandro Tonali.
Both Tonali and Guimaraes have been carded in both of their first two Premier League games this season. Against City, Tonali committed two fouls and Guimaraes three, and the prior week against Villa, Tonali struck twice again, Guimaraes once.
With both players nailed on to play, either one (or both) is a valid selection for fouls and cards against Liverpool. This is only magnified given that Liverpool’s highly technical midfield draw lots of fouls. In their last game, against Bournemouth, each midfielder drew at least one foul.
🛑 Liverpool Defensive Stats: Gakpo’s high fouling record
Cody Gakpo has been tasked with adopting a deeper role it seems, playing left midfield in both games this season. This has put him in a position to make more fouls – committing three against Chelsea in the opening game.
This new position also means he will be pitted against Bruno Guimaraes, who drew the most amount of fouls for the Magpies last season at 2.74 per game. Furthermore, last time out against Newcastle, the Dutch international committed two fouls, despite only playing less than 60 minutes. You can back him at 1.67 to make two fouls on Sunday.
