📈 Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa Form & Tactics

This could be a really awkward game for both sides as it is sandwiched between a quarter final tie in the Europa League. Forest have a bit more work to do than Villa to get to the semi finals, but this game is still important for both sides domestically with Forest looking to avoid relegation and Villa looking to secure a spot in the Champions League next season.

I wouldn’t be surprised to see Unai Emery’s focus turn to Europe in the final weeks of the season. He’s such an expert when it comes to going deep in the Europa League, and winning that trophy would qualify Aston Villa for the Champions League anyway, so Villa may be able to take their foot off the gas a little in what is a very tight race for a Champions League finish between Chelsea, Manchester United, Villa and Liverpool.

This is a massive game for Forest. Not only could they find themselves even closer to the relegation zone if West Ham manage to pick up all three points against Wolves on Friday night, but they also need to get some momentum going at home. Forest have failed to win any of their last seven home matches, which is an unsustainable record going into the final few games of the season.

📔 Nottingham Forest v Aston Villa Formation & Team News

Forest should set up in a 4-2-3-1 or a 4-4-2. Vitor Pereira reminds me a little of Nuno Espírito Santo in the way he sets up the side, which is a little ironic given that Forest parted ways with Nuno earlier in the season.

Forest are not clinical at all, they have the worst shot conversion rate of any side in the Premier League at home (5.7%), so Pereira will know that his side needs to create as many chances as possible to have a chance against this Villa side.

Morgan Gibbs-White will be crucial to any chance Forest have of winning this game. He’s scored nine goals in the Premier League this season, six more than any other Forest player. There aren’t any major absences for Forest here, they should be able to field a pretty strong lineup - even with the hectic schedule as a result of their Europa League tie.

Aston Villa will set up in a narrow 4-2-3-1 shape with the aim of building through the thirds and creating overloads in central areas. Aston Villa are quite an expressive side, and don’t hesitate to take aim from range. They’ve scored 14 goals from outside the box in the Premier League this season, more than any other side in the division.

Boubacar Kamara remains a notable absence for Villa at the moment. They aren’t quite the same side when the defensive midfielder is unavailable, which is a small boost to Forest’s chances of taking something from this game.
