Chelsea will now really fancy their chances of at least reaching the final of the Club World Cup, seeing as they are on the more fortunate side of the draw. If Chelsea can beat Palmeiras here, it would set up a semi-final tie against either Fluminense or Al Hilal, who shouldn’t be underestimated, but it is certainly a more manageable task than facing up against one of Real Madrid, Dortmund, PSG, or Bayern. Chelsea will have to eventually overcome one of these sides if they want to lift the trophy, but can start that process with a victory here. 

Palmeiras are quite defensively minded and won’t take too many risks in this game as they have shown throughout the tournament with two 0-0 draws so far. We can expect the pattern of the game to be set early on here with Chelsea dominating the ball and probing to find a way through a low block, something which the Blues are more than used to playing against. Chelsea looked really motivated in their 4-1 victory over Benfica, probably due to what they felt was a slight injustice with the referee awarding Benfica a penalty in the dying stages of the game after a four-hour delay due to weather conditions. 

Chelsea have the quality to breakdown and establish a clear lead against Palmeiras, they should have learnt their lesson from their group stage loss against Flamengo and be further motivated with how the draw has taken shape which seemingly offers Chelsea a route to the final that is pretty fortunate compared with what Maresca’s men may have had to face.

Estevao is in the unique position of facing his future club. The teenager will be linking up with the Blues after this tournament and should be eager to make an impression on his new manager and teammates.

Estevao and Allan are the outlets for this Palmeiras side; they are defensively minded, but their wide players are where they look when they want to get up the pitch.

Estevao has had eight shots across his four matches at the Club World Cup (2.44 per 90) and is averaging 2.04 shots per 90 across his 11 appearances in the Brazilian Serie A this campaign. We should see a slight increase in these numbers, seeing as Estevao will be eager to make an impression on his new manager. 

🔵 Liam Delap

Delap was starved of service in Chelsea’s 4-1 victory after extra time against Benfica in the round of 16. He was replaced after 80 minutes, but should get more chances here as Chelsea attempt to break a low block.

Previously, Chelsea have not had a physical presence in the box that they could look to locate with Nicolas Jackson not being an imposing enough figure, but Delap now offers a different angle for Chelsea as they try to break down stubborn backlines.

Delap has already contributed to Chelsea at the Club World Cup, scoring against Esperance Tunis and providing an assist against LAFC in the group stages.

Palmeiras edged out a very close round of 16 tie against fellow Brazilian side Botafogo, coming away 1-0 winners after extra time thanks to a strike on 100 minutes by Paulinho. Palmeiras are a very defensively minded side and won’t look to take too many risks against the quality of Chelsea. Their main outlets are the wide players in Estevao and Allan who can cause Chelsea problems if the Blues are slow to regain their defensive shape as they’re expected to control the ball in this encounter.
