Sol de America v Cerro Porteno
🏟
Friday 30th September – 11:30PM KO
The league leaders, unbeaten in seven games, visit Sol de América in Villa Elisa who are on a decent run themselves. Pablo Guiñazú’s side have lost just one of their previous five league matches, scoring eight goals in that run.
The danzarín’s game winners in the previous match will be familiar to this week’s rivals, 41 year old Santiago Salcedo was three time champion with Cerro Porteño while Rodrigo Rojas captained the Ciclón to the title in 2017. For Salcedo it was his first ninety minutes since March as he becomes an important leader in the team. There was some debate about the site of the game, Cerro preferring a larger venue for their fanbase, but Sol insisted in staying at home where they have won 4 out of 6 this season. Only Resistencia have won there this season.
Chiqui Arce said his team were enjoying their football after a resounding 5-0 win over Tacuary in the previous game, the first time they’d scored that many goals since November 2021 in a victory over Nacional. Federico Carrizo has shined in recent matches, providing three goal involvements in the last four games, he seems to perform better without creative midfielder Claudio Aquino operating in the same spaces. Braian Samudio has cemented his place as the main striker, replacing Marcelo Moreno Martins, with another headed goal against Tacuary netting three in the last four.
Although Sol de América won this fixture in the Apertura, many of the stars from that team have left especially in defence with Iván Cazal (Lanús), Miguel Jacquet (Nacional) and Gabriel Báez (Cerro Porteño) switching clubs. In the last game at La Nueva Olla it was Cerro who were comfortable 2-0 winners with Carrizo getting a goal and assist. Expecting something similar to kick off Week 14.

Guairena v Olimpia
🏟
Sunday 2nd October – 9.00PM KO
Guaireña sit in fifth place just three points behind Olimpia (who have a game in hand) so see this as a great opportunity to get higher up the table in a push for Sudamericana competition. Olimpia come into this after a 10-day rest, not having played since the defeat to Guaraní and are three games without a win (four if you count the abandoned match vs Libertad where they were 4-0 down at halftime).
Guaireña’s midweek defeat to Sportivo Ameliano in the Copa Paraguay ended their best bet for Sudamericana qualification, they will now have to try and get in through league position. It was their second straight 2-0 defeat to Ameliano who had overcome them in the league last weekend. Now they are on the road again, the match won’t be played in Villarrica but 200 km further east in Ciudad del Este. It means Troadio Duarte’s side will have racked up over 500km on the team bus as they played their third game in nine days.
Julio César Cáceres will be glad to have had some time with his players after a run of just one win in five league games seems to have put them out of the title race. But despite the respite he will be without captain Richard Ortiz who has picked up an injury. Derlis González is back from suspension, but he was in Europe in midweek on international duty and might not be fit to travel. He is the only player to have scored from open play in the last three games with El Decano benefitting from penalties and own goals.
Olimpia have the advantage of a rest and the game is on neutral ground, they have also won the previous five meetings. However, given the recent drop in form and the possibility they play without both captain and top scorer there is more value on the goals market.

Libertad v General Caballero
🏟
Sunday 2nd October – 11:30PM KO
Libertad crashed out of the Copa Paraguay on penalties in midweek and they take on General Caballero who had picked up a surprise win against Guaraní last week.
Libertad’s proud home record is on the line, they have won 17 from 19 not losing since they renovated their stadium. They have also managed at least 2 goals in all six of their games at during the Clausura with the 18 strikes shared out mostly between Lorenzo Melgarejo (8) and Óscar Cardozo (4). Melgarejo should be available after international duty as will Iván Piris and Diego Gómez.
General Caballero picked up a 3-0 victory last week, the first time they’d scored over 2.5 goals in a game since beating Libertad earlier in the season. Notably both matches were at home where they have been considerably stronger than on their travels. They have averaged 1.43 points per game in the Estadio Ka’arendy compared to just 0.67 on the road. The only victory was against Guaireña who are also based in the Paraguayan countryside, they are yet to win in Asunción in the Clausura.
Libertad will be expected to win and to score, there is little suggestion that General Caballero can replicate their home form at the fortress that Tuyucuá has become.
