As was the case on Thursday night, I expect both teams to find the net in Monday night’s second leg (1-1) at St Mirren Park. Both sides went in search of victory in the first leg in Maryhill, and, in truth, there could easily have been more goals. I can’t see either team adopting a more cautious approach here, which is why I’m keen to back both teams to score once again.

What also strengthens the case is the fact that each team has obliged in all three of Partick Thistle’s play-off matches this season, including in both legs of their semi-final tie against Dunfermline.

Although St Mirren have often looked short of attacking threat this season, they have now made the net bulge in three consecutive matches. That run includes last weekend’s 1-1 draw with Dundee United in Paisley.

It’s also worth noting that these sides met at this venue in the Scottish Cup not too long ago, and both teams found the net on that occasion as well.

I thought Partick Thistle were the better side for long spells of Thursday night’s first leg, and I think they offer plenty of value to avoid defeat inside 90 minutes on Monday night. Mark Wilson’s men make the short trip to St Mirren, unbeaten in 12 matches in domestic competitions. That run began after their Scottish Cup defeat to St Mirren a couple of months ago. However, Thistle were unfortunate to come out on the losing side that night after a controversial VAR decision awarded the hosts a penalty.

What’s more, St Mirren are not a side accustomed to winning this season, having claimed victory in just eight of their 38 Scottish Premiership matches, while winning only five of their 19 home games. A recent 2-0 defeat at home to Livingston hardly inspires confidence either, particularly as Craig McLeish's side were one of only two teams to lose to the Lions in top-flight action this season.

It has the feel of another 1-1 draw, and I wouldn’t be surprised if penalties are needed to separate the pair.

While St Mirren have endured a real season of struggle in the Scottish Premiership, they were particularly strong when it came to earning corners. That is reflected in the numbers, with the Saints' average of 5.50 flag kicks per game only bettered by Rangers, Celtic, and Hearts. With that in mind, I think Craig McLeish's men look well placed to force at least five against Partick Thistle on Monday night.

St Mirren's knack for racking up healthy corner counts was on show in their last home match when they forced 10 against Dundee United, while they hit eight in a recent home game with Livingston and six away at Dundee earlier this month.

Further encouragement comes from the fact that the Paisley outfit won exactly five corners against Partick Thistle on Thursday night, so I’m confident that they can match that tally on home turf with their own supporters behind them.

With so much riding on this for both teams, I’m more than happy to back 4 or more cards.

While St Mirren’s Scottish Premiership matches this season have been producing an average of 3.26 cards per game, it is worth noting that three of their final four home fixtures featured at least four bookings. The Saints themselves were averaging just over two cards per 90 in the Scottish top-flight this season, notably collecting four red cards along the way.

As for Partick Thistle, their Scottish Championship fixtures this season generated an average of 4.47 cards per game. What’s more, Mark Wilson’s side were particularly effective at drawing fouls and bookings, with their second tier opponents seeing an average of 2.54 cards per 90 this term - which was the 2nd-highest in the division.

The referee appointment only adds to the appeal of this selection, with Nick Walsh flashing at least four cards in each of his last seven domestic assignments.
