Petit Tonnerre gets my vote in terms of a win selection in the second race of the Aintree Grand National Festival. He hasn’t much to find on official ratings with the top two in the betting here and he comes here fresh. He was impressive when winning a 3 runner race on his only British start and he is unbeaten. We don’t know what his ceiling is but at the current prices, I’m taking my chances on him.
Il Etait Temps ran a brilliant race on her hurdle debut at Leopardstown given how inexperienced she was
Fautinette also comes here fresh. She is a French import who is hard to asses but she is in very good hands. Her French form needs building on here but again she is unbeaten and we don’t know what she’s capable off. To my eye she is underestimated by the market.

Protektorat has a great record around Aintree and he offers value to add another win on the board. He won a Grade 1 as a novice chaser here last year. He then went on to finish 2nd in a very competitive handicap off of a mark of 134. He progressed again to win a Grade 2 here earlier in the season. His last effort was an honourable 3rd in the gold cup. He was lightly raced up to then so hopefully that hasn’t left its mark and he is one to keep on side here.

Monmiral has had a very disappointing season, he looked top drawer when winning at this meeting last year. He made his season reappearance in the open Grade 1 fighting fifth in Newcastle, where he picked up a nasty injury so its easy put a line through that. On the face of it’s harder to forgive his last run, a disappointing 4th at Grade 2 level. He travelled well that day and was a bit keen, I think he was entitled to blow out after the 2nd last hurdle. I’m backing Paul Nicholls to have him back here on song, even if he is in similar form to what he was last year he is a big player here.

Jett is justifiably top of the market here. He ran a belter over these fences in the national last year. He travelled very well, before the marathon trip found him out late on. The shorter 2m 5f trip will insure he hits the line hard. His jockey is very good around these fences and is in general an asset to his mount in amateur rider races. The concern is the stable switch and the horse is a year older now. His price is fair and I hope he’s in the same form as last year, if he is they won’t go past him.
In terms of an e/w selection, I think Myth Buster is underestimated by the market. He made a successful yard debut in a small race at Musselburgh last time, on the numbers he ran to as he ever did for his old yard and at 9 years old he is young enough relative to his opposition. Patrick Mullins has been booked for the ride and he is a horse that shouldn’t be as big as he is in the betting. For all that Jett is the one to beat.

Towards the top of the market I like Gunshot Ridge. He is a 7-year-old on the up. He started his chasing career with a decent 3rd here but off of a lower mark. He then progressed in the meantime and he ran a lot better than the numbers suggest last time. He went off to hard in front on a stiff track, the return to Aintree will suit him and he has the profile to win this..
Shakem Up’arry is the stable 2nd choice based on jockey bookings, but I think the market has overplayed this. Global Citizen gave Killian woods one of the best days he’s ever had in the saddle. I think it would have been very hard to jump ship. There is a chance Killian made his decision out of loyalty. Shakem Up’arry has an unexposed profile and like gunshot ridge, he had excuses the last day. He too went too hard, the return to nice ground and the track switch look positives for Shakem U’parry and I think he has the scope to go close here.
