Competition: Euro 2024
Group D of Euro 2024 gets underway on Sunday afternoon as Poland take on the Netherlands. Both teams had an unnerving qualification process with Poland being the final team to qualify, beating Wales to reach the tournament, while the Netherlands secured their qualification in their penultimate fixture.

Poland will be entering their 5th Euros tournament in a row, they have only progressed beyond the group stage on one of those occasions and will be hoping the opportunity of a 3rd place finish will increase their chances in this edition.
The Netherlands in contrast, have appeared in 10 editions of the tournament and despite a round of 16 exit in the last edition, have a rich pedigree, being semi-finalists on three occasions and champions in 1988. Although this is far from the vintage Dutch teams we have seen in the past, they still have one of the strongest defences in the tournament and some highly promising young talents in attacking areas.
Poland, although on the up recently and with a solid team with experience in Europe’s top leagues, are still heavily reliant on an ageing Robert Lewandowski, which has some major implications for this game, as our preview will show.
Poland v Netherlands Best Bets
Poland will be without two of their main attacking threats and focal points of the time, with Robert Lewandowski in particular, a major loss. They could struggle to break down a very experienced Dutch defence.
The market has already been cut slightly but there’s still plenty of room in this price at the time of writing. Poland’s poor group record and forced tactical reshuffle adds even further weight to this selection.

⚔️ Poland v Netherlands Head-to-Head
The Oranje have a far superior record against the Poles, racking up nine wins, seven draws and just three defeats in their 19 encounters so far. In fact you would need to go back to 1979 for the last Polish victory against a Dutch side, with the Netherlands winning 6 of their last seven encounters.
Although a glimmer of hope is offered to Poland, with all three of their victories against the Dutch coming in competitive games, with 1 win at the World Cup and 2 at successive European Championships during Polish football’s golden age.
📊 Poland Form and Stats
Unlike some of the other Euros qualifiers, Poland have tested themselves against decent opposition in their two warm-up games. Winning against Turkey and Ukraine and scoring 5 goals in the process. However, they could be considered fortunate to have won the Turkey game with a last-minute goal after facing 22 Turkish attempts at their goal.
The Poles had a poor qualifying campaign and just scraped 3rd place in their group over Moldova by a single point and narrowly made the Euro finals after a penalty shoot-out victory in their play-off game against Wales. They lost 3 of their 8 qualifying games and had a neutral goal difference, scoring 10 and conceding 10 across the campaign.
Team news has emerged that Robert Lewandwoski and Arkadiusz Milik will both be out of the first game, which puts a severe dent in the Polish attack.
📊 Netherlands Form and Stats
The Netherlands come into the tournament in fine form, with two 4-0 victories in recent friendlies against Canada and Iceland and six clean sheets in their last seven games.
They finished second in their qualifying group with a comfortable five-point cushion to Greece in 3rd place, only losing to group winners France, home and away. There’s plenty of goal threat in the team, with 17 goals scored in those 8 games and if you take those two France fixtures out of the equation, they conceded just one goal against the rest of the group.
