PSV and Rangers could be forgiven for having a sense of déjà vu prior to their Champions League play-off second leg. After all, this is exactly the position where these clubs found themselves last season, with the tie balanced at 2-2 following the first encounter at Ibrox. With Rangers famously going on to win the return match in the Netherlands 1-0. Antonio Colak scored the only goal in that encounter, but with the Croatian no longer at the club, Michael Beale’s side are looking for a new hero in Eindhoven, while the home team are looking to reverse what they feel was an injustice.
The match is terribly timed from Rangers’ perspective, with an Old Firm encounter against Celtic to follow at the weekend, yet they will have to put that Ibrox clash to one side to focus on getting a potentially money-spinning victory. It would be Beale’s finest hour as Rangers’ manager if he were to succeed, but the task is a stern one. These PSV v Rangers stats are designed to give an insight into what to expect in what promises to be a thrilling match.

PSV stats: Eindhoven for excitement
PSV have the advantage of coming into this match after a weekend off, with their last match that pulsating 2-2 draw at Ibrox last weekend. For Peter Bosz’s side it was a case of business as usual in Glasgow. PSV stats show that they typically control a lot of the ball, as they did against Rangers, score plenty of goals and also give up plenty, too. The PSV v Rangers stats from the first leg show this is exactly how the game in Scotland panned out.
Indeed, although the Dutch side bossed much of the possession and territory, the teams finished level on five shots on target apiece. PSV netted 2.56 goals on average per game last season, and though they have changed coach in the interim they have managed to strike at least twice in the last five competitive matches they have played.
In the few matches they have played before last week, there was evidence that their defence was improving. This may be skewed by the small sample size because Rangers’ two goals have lifted their average goals conceded per game from 0.6 to around 1 – which is in line with last season’s tally.
Rangers stats: A very different experience for Gers
Fundamentally, this is a very different type of game for Rangers compared to the ones that they typically play domestically, and this is crucial to take into account in a PSV v Rangers bet builder. The Cheat Sheet shows that Rangers typically dominate possession in Scotland by claiming some two-thirds of the ball, yet last week they had just 35% possession.
On top of this, Beale’s side are still getting to know each other, with their offensive work notably lacking the typical fluidity that they showed at times last season. An all-new attack is in place, with Abdallah Sima catching the eye last week as he contributed a vital goal. Still, chance creation is down, and although Rangers managed 24 shots against Ross County at the weekend, pointing to an improving trend, this was against a far weaker opponent than PSV.
It was also notable last week that Rangers picked up four yellow cards. This doesn’t happen often, so it was clear the pace of the Dutch side gave them headaches.
🎯 PSV offensive stats: Veerman busy at Ibrox
Joey Veerman could be something of a wildcard player to watch in this match both in terms of fouls won and assists. He was nowhere to be seen among PSV’s fouls drawn leaders last season but picked up three free kicks in the first game, a team-high figure.
Perhaps more eye-catching, though, was the number of key passes he managed, seven, no one on the park came close to him in this regard. Johan Bakayoko is a more orthodox threat for PSV, with his two assists last week highlighting his importance to the team’s build-up. Though a direct winger, he picks up a curiously small number of fouls. He earned only one free kick last week and sat at just 0.59 per game last season, so just because he is busy and active does not mean he will impact the PSV v Rangers stats in terms of the foul count.
PSV shared their shots around well last week, with nine different players mustering an effort of some sort at goal and five different players each managing one shot on target. Two of the players who managed more than one shot on target per 90 last season – Luuk de Jong and Johan Bakayoko – should be expected to be lively again.
Bakayoko was PSV’s joint liveliest player in terms of shots, tied with Ismael Saibari on four. The latter didn’t manage to find the target at Ibrox but if he continues to take aim just as regularly, he may well do so at home. He has, however, a habit of playing for relatively few minutes. It would be surprising come full time if the PSV v Rangers stats did not show another significant count for shots on target after both teams managed five last week, such is the attacking attitude of the hosts.
🎯 Rangers offensive stats: Numbers down across the board
Rangers had a difficult time getting going last week, and though they managed five shots on target, this was still down on the 7.05 they managed last season domestically. This is a match they will have to make the most of their chances in. As an attacking threat, the Gers were limited last Tuesday, as Rangers’ stats from the game show. They mustered only six free kicks drawn – two by burly forward Cyrille Dessers – while even the normally lively Todd Cantwell picked up only one, well down from his average of 2.45 last season. In terms of chance creation, James Tavernier and Cyrille Dessers led the way in the first leg with two key passes, while Borna Barisic managed one, although saw more of the ball than any other home player.
Nine of Rangers’ 11 shots in total last week came from players who were not at the club last season, and whose presence is therefore not on the PSV v Rangers Cheat Sheet. This reflects a completely new approach to the attack, which means that the document is of limited use in these circumstances. Rabbi Matondo notably led the way with four shots in total (two were blocked), despite playing only 23 minutes off the bench, while Abdallah Sima was the only player to muster more than one shot on target, with the Brighton loanee managing two.
After a strong impact as a substitute last week, Matondo is one to look out for in the second leg, though it’s unclear which of the front three Beale might sacrifice. He will most likely be used as an impact player again so should not be considered likely to replicate that effort. James Tavernier managed just a single shot last week but offered 2.17 on average last season, while Todd Cantwell also had just one as he was typically restricted to a defensive role.
🛑 PSV defensive stats: The Sangare question
PSV stats for 2022/23 show Jordan Teze leading the way in terms of tackles per game on 1.56, and while the right back managed two at Ibrox, Andre Ramalho engaged in five in Glasgow. The Brazilian was not even in the leading five tacklers at the club last season so is worth keeping an eye on in this one.
Ramalho also led PSV in clearances and blocks last week, showing how active he was up against Cyrille Dessers, who is again likely to be Rangers’ primary outlet, at least in terms of getting the ball to feet. The Ramalho v Dessers battle is one that promises to yield fouls, with the PSV defender drawing two free kicks against his direct opponent and also giving two away last time out. This should be another physical tussle that flies under the radar of the PSV v Rangers Cheat Sheet, due to the Dutch side having to work harder defensively than they are used to.
🛑 Rangers defensive stats: Tavernier made to work
Rangers’ tackling figures were way higher last weekend than they typically are on average, with James Tavernier having a busy night down the right. Up against PSV’s attacking left back Sergino Dest and Noa Lang, two new arrivals, he was forced to make four tackles. This could be replicated with more on the line in this encounter.
Indeed, six of the starting XI made two or more tackles, although strangely not Todd Cantwell, who pressed high and gave away three fouls – more than any other player in the Rangers side. The Englishman, who led Rangers stats with 1.68 tackles per game last season, is likely to be at least as busy in Eindhoven.
