Real Betis v Chelsea

🗓️

Kick Off: Wednesday 28th May at 20:00

🏆

Competition: Europa Conference League

Fresh from securing a spot in the Champions League next season, Chelsea will be looking to secure their first trophy since 2021 against Real Betis in the Conference League final. The Blues will be looking to banish the ghosts of recent domestic finals to become the first side to win all three European trophies.

Real Betis have enjoyed a strong second half of the season which has seen them excel in this competition and claim a spot in the Europa League through their domestic finish. They ended the season a bit timidly with no wins across their last five matches but Manuel Pellegrini’s side will have had this final in full focus so this stumble isn’t the most surprising.

Enzo Fernandez has been one of Chelsea’s most impressive and impactful players this season, his quality in this competition has been notable with the Argentine registering six goal contributions across his five appearances in the competition (one goal, five assists).

Fernandez has been deployed in a more advanced role by Enzo Maresca this season, with the 24-year-old previously being between roles under Mauricio Pochettino. This has had a marked impact on his goal contribution numbers this campaign. Fernandez has registered 20 goal contributions across his 45 appearances in all competitions this season (seven goals, 13 assists) compared to the 10 he recorded across 40 appearances last campaign (seven goals, three assists).

Fernandez registered two assists against Djurgarden in his most recent appearance in the Conference League and has made a habit of turning up at the crucial moment for Chelsea during the run-in with goal contributions against Tottenham, Fulham, Everton and Liverpool in the Premier League.

Chelsea have scored 38 goals across their 12 games in the Conference League this season (3.17 per game). They’ve been a cut above their opponents throughout the competition, and although this is likely to be their toughest test so far, Maresca’s men should still be able to create chances with the attacking quality within their ranks.

Antony has been a massive part of Real Betis’ mid season push to finish in the top six in La Liga and reach this final. He’s registered 14 goal contributions across his 25 appearances for Real Betis since joining in January, he had previously only registered one goal contribution across his 14 appearances for Manchester United, showing his improvement in the second half of the season.

Antony has had 12 shots on target across his eight appearances in the Conference League (1.59 per 90), which is a record that has returned four goals in the competition. Antony scored in both legs of the semi-final against Fiorentina and can be backed to continue his strong shot on target record in this competition.

💻 Real Betis v Chelsea Form and Tactics

These sides enter this final following contrasting ends to the league season. Betis had managed to fight their way into the conversation for a place in the Champions League next season, but a late-season collapse allowed their competition to pull away, leaving this tournament as their focus. Chelsea secured a place in the Champions League next season on the final day of the Premier League season with a 1-0 win over Nottingham Forest, this was the main season objective for the Blues but there is a slighter wider picture here with Chelsea needing to overcome a recent curse with finals - the Blues have not lifted a trophy since 2021.

The most notable aspect of Enzo Maresca’s side at the end of the season has been the defensive stubbornness of this Chelsea side, a resilience that many thought wasn’t present amongst the youngest crop of players in the Premier League. Chelsea conceded 63 goals last season, 20 more than they did this term. They’ve kept five clean sheets across their last 10 Premier League games at a crucial point in the season, only conceding six goals across this period. Even the error-ridden Robert Sanchez ended the campaign with the joint-best save percentage in the league (73.6%) and the 3rd-most clean sheets (10). This structure should prove valuable in the tense setting of a final.

Real Betis have failed to win any of their last five matches heading into this final. This isn’t always an indicator of which way the trophy will go, but it’s certainly better to have a bit of momentum coming into a game of this magnitude. They’re quite an aggressive side (13.4 fouls committed per game in the Conference League) with their main strength being in central areas with the likes of Isco and Johnny Cardoso. Antony has also been a revelation since joining on loan in January, he registered three goal contributions across the two games against Fiorentina in the semi-final.

Betis may be forced into an aggressive approach, they’ve failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 11 matches, but they have managed to find the back of the net themselves in each of these which suggests that this could be quite a goal-heavy final with Betis unable to rely on the security of their backline - against a Chelsea side that have scored 38 goals in the competition this season.
