Barcelona v Real Madrid

🗓️

Kick Off: Saturday 11th May at 15:15

🏆

Competition: La Liga

📺
Watch Live: Premier Sports 1

Real Madrid and Barcelona have already met three times this season, with Barcelona coming out on top on each occasion. This latest El Clasico has serious implications for the title race in La Liga, Real Madrid can cut the gap to Hansi Flick’s side to just one point with all three points here but a win for Barcelona would extend their lead at the summit to seven points - a tough total to make up with only three games left of the season following this fixture.

Barcelona have already got the better of Real Madrid on three occasions this season. Their first victory over Los Blancos this season came via a 4-0 win at the Bernabeu.

They followed this up with another convincing 5-2 victory in the Super Cup before winning another trophy by beating Real Madrid 3-2 in the Copa Del Rey final after extra time. Real Madrid’s campaign has become sour in recent weeks, with Carlo Ancelotti’s side crashing out of the Champions League to Arsenal and missing out on the cup.

As well as Barcelona’s dominant record against Real Madrid this season, the Real backline has been injury struck all season and still has notable absentees. Antonio Rudiger, Dani Carvajal, David Alaba, Ferland Mendy and Eder Militao are all injured for this game, leaving a beleaguered and inexperienced Real Madrid backline to deal with one of the most lethal frontlines in Europe.

Barcelona’s goalscoring power should be enough for them to beat Real Madrid for the fourth time this season and effectively wrap up the La Liga title. Barcelona have won 13 of their 17 home games this season and have scored more goals at home than any other side in La Liga (46).

🔍 Barcelona v Real Madrid Players to Watch

🔵 Raphinha

Raphinha found the back of the net against Inter in the Champions League during the week to take his goal tally for the campaign to 32 goals across all competitions. 16 of these goals have come in LaLiga, where he’s been averaging 1.43 shots on target per 90.

This metric could be given an opportunity to rise here when considering the missing personnel in Real Madrid’s backline. Raphinha has had 2+ shots on target in two of three meetings between the sides this season, he’s also scored three goals across these games, including a brace in the Super Cup final.

Jude Bellingham

Bellingham has cut a really frustrated figure at times this season as the campaign hasn’t quite gone to plan for Los Blancos. He committed two fouls in the most recent head-to-head meeting between the sides and was also shown a yellow card. He also committed two fouls in the initial league meeting between the sides at the Bernabeu.

He is likely to continue to be frustrated here, given the current state of these two sides, which can contribute to his foul numbers. Bellingham is averaging 1.17 fouls committed per 90 in La Liga this season.

💻 Barcelona v Real Madrid Form and Tactics

Both sides have superb attacking options on paper, but Barcelona certainly get more out of their frontline than Real Madrid do, especially in the big moments. This is largely due to the supporting structure that the Barcelona front four have, namely in midfield with Pedri and Frenkie De Jong controlling the tempo very well. Real Madrid don’t quite have that player that can control the game in the middle of the park, with the physical nature of the game being a bit too much for Luka Modric to fill this role regularly at the age of 39.

Real Madrid’s backline is also a concern, many of their starting defenders will be absent for this game which is awful timing against a Barcelona side that have scored more goals at home than any other side in La Liga this season (46). Real Madrid have conceded 2+ goals in three of their last five games across all competitions, highlighting this defensive frailty.

Barcelona were knocked out of the Champions League by Inter Milan during the week, but they didn’t limp out of the competition, showing how effective they can be in the final third against a defensively secure side, which Real Madrid are far from at the moment. Barcelona should be motivated by the opportunity to put one hand on the La Liga title; a win here for the home side would put seven points between Barcelona and Real Madrid with just three games left to play.
