A quick turnaround for Premier League clubs as they return to action just two days after the boxing day round of fixtures. Two teams fresh off victories, Southampton and Spurs, meet at St Marys Stadium keen to build on their momentum.
Prior to victory away to West Ham on boxing day, Southampton had failed to win in 6 matches but picked up 3 points to give them a 9 point cushion over Watford. One of the most inconsistent teams in the league, Saints have plenty of firepower in attack particularly with the return from injury of pacey striker Adam Armstrong.
Under Antonio Conte, Spurs have seen a change of fortunes and appear to have a system which brings the best out of Son Heung Min and England skipper Harry Kane. Son has netted in his previous 4 league appearances and Kane his previous two appearing to rediscover their best form.
With quality attacking talent all over the field, this game provides an exciting look for a bet builder with the possibility of goals a plenty.
Southampton v Tottenham Bet Builder Tips
Both Teams to Score
Southampton have failed to keep a clean sheet since 5th November and have scored in all but one of the games in that time period. Hassenhuttl’s side average a goal a game at home this season, scoring in each of their last 5 home games. The impact of the return of Adam and Stuart Armstrong cannot be underestimated with the latter seeing a return to action off the bench at the weekend.
Antonio Conte has re-introduced his 3-4-3 system which dominated this league in 2017 to reinvigorate life into a difficult Spurs season. Since his arrival, Spurs have scored 12 in 6 failing to score just once against Everton in Conte’s first game. Pivotally, Conte appears to be bringing the best out of Harry Kane again, having scored just once before the last time games, nowhere near his 36 goal contributions from last season.
Goals seem to be a plenty between these sides, Spurs scoring at least two in their last 5 and Saints games having 3 or more goals in six of their last seven. If last season’s 5-2 meeting is anything to go by then both teams should have chances flowing this game.
Oriol Romeu to be Carded
Oriol Romeu has been an essential part of the Saints midfield partnering skipper James Ward-Prowse and providing balance in more of an anchor role. Playing over 1500 minutes already this season, Romeu ranks 5th in the league for fouls and has the second most yellow cards with 5. Saints’ other starting central midfielder Ward-Prowse has just two yellow cards, showing Romeu to be the more willing to take a card for the team, especially as the deeper of the midfield two and the last line of defence.
Referee Anthony Taylor is also no stranger to dishing out yellow cards averaging 4 a game in the Premier League this season and booking Romeu in stoppage time when he covered Southampton v Brighton this season. For this bet builder, Romeu looks a lock for a yellow card with the second most of any Southampton player
Che Adams to have 1+ Shot on target
Adams made his return from injury off the bench on Sunday in a 17 minute cameo at the London stadium. Prior to injury, Adams was in form with 3 goals in his last 6 games, one of his strongest stretches of premier league football. Adams has a shot on target in every home game he has started in this season, only failing to register on the road or when he has featured briefly off the bench.
Spurs concede 11.28 shots per game so are not shy to give striker the opportunity to have a pop, and I expect Adams to take this with open arms, particularly against a Spurs back line who played 70 more minutes than him the other day
Harry Kane to Score Anytime
Harry Kane is beginning to rediscover the form that led to a strong PFA POTY case last year. I have briefly touched on some of Kane’s figures last season and after a stunning euro campaign as captain he has struggled to rediscover that form.
Under Conte this has changed, Kane looks livelier and has rediscovered the partnership with Son that combined for 4 goals in this fixture last season. Although Kane might not set up 4 here like last season, I do expect him to score here like he did in that rout, continuing his form for 3 goals in as many games.
