South Korea have bags of experience at the World Cup, as they have featured in each of the last ten editions.

They have only made it out of the group stages on three occasions in that stretch, but should be confident in a weaker Group A, alongside Mexico, South Africa, and Czechia.

🌍 How did South Korea qualify for the 2026 World Cup?

South Korea comfortably topped their AFC qualification group in round two. China, Thailand, and Singapore were barely able to lay a glove on South Korea, who scored 20 and conceded just once across their six matches. That sent them into the next group, which gave a similar outcome.

South Korea kept their unbeaten record intact with six wins and four draws from ten games in the next round, although once again they had relatively easy fixtures. Jordan were the other side who secured qualification to the World Cup, but South Korea fared well against them, taking four points across their two meetings.

👔 Who is the South Korea manager at the World Cup 2026?

Hong Myung-Bo was drafted in to be the South Korea manager for their World Cup qualifying campaign, and he got his side through the group comfortably.

However, South Korea have had a mixed bag of results in their friendlies since then - they were on the receiving end of a 5-0 drubbing from Brazil, before also losing 4-0 against the Ivory Coast.

They did manage to beat the USA and Paraguay, but South Korea haven’t got much experience against the top sides, and they could struggle in those fixtures.

🔎 Who are South Korea's key players to watch at World Cup 2026?

Heung-min Son

It’s impossible to talk about South Korea without mentioning Heung-min Son. This will be his fourth World Cup, and he is South Korea’s joint-top scorer in the competition - if he adds six more goals, he will be South Korea’s record goalscorer across all competitions.

Son hasn’t been in the most prolific form this season, with just one goal from his nine appearances for LAFC, but he will shoulder a massive attacking responsibility for his national side here, and he usually turns up on the big stage.

Hwang Hee-Chan

Hwang Hee-Chan is another key player for South Korea in the final third, and he will hope to be available at the World Cup this summer. The Wolves striker has been hampered by injuries this campaign, but he is effective at finding the back of the net.

He might be reduced to a role from the bench, but he usually doesn’t need much time to make an impact. He scored the winning goal against Portugal in the 2022 World Cup off the bench, which ensured South Korea made it out of the group stages.

Kim Min-jae

Kim Min-jae will be the most experienced player at the back for South Korea here, and his leadership will be essential. The centre back has typically featured for Bayern Munich this season when Vincent Kompany opts for rotation, but Kim will be one of the first names on the teamsheet for his national side.

When he was available, he started and played the full 90 in all of South Korea’s qualifying games, to highlight his importance.

South Korea are massive outsiders for this World Cup, coming in at odds of around 500/1 to win the entire tournament.

It's quite startling to see South Korea priced as high as they are.

They were semi-finalists in their first tournament in 2002, and have been steady competitors in every World Cup they have played in.

They have quality players across all areas of the pitch, most of whom play in top-level leagues.

They are unlikely to win it, but it would be a shock to see them exit at the group stage.

South Korea are in Group A alongside Mexico, South Africa, and Czechia.

GK: Kim Seung-gyu

DEF: Seol Young-woo, Kim Min-jae, Cho Yu-min

MID: Lee Tae-seok, Lee Jae-sung, Paik Seung-ho, Kim Jin-su

ATT: Son Heung-min, Oh Hyeon-gyu, Lee Kang-in

South Korea vs Czechia kicks off at 03:00 GMT on June 12. Mexico vs South Korea kicks off at 02:00 GMT on June 19. South Africa vs South Korea kicks off at 02:00 GMT on June 25.

Heung-min Son is a national hero in his native South Korea.

Despite being 33, he still has plenty to offer his nation.

Should he miss key games through injury, the likes of PSG's Lee Kang-in will carry the majority of his country's attacking threat.

Heung-min Son and Hwang Hee-Chan are on penalties for South Korea, with Heung-min Son and Lee Kang-in taking free-kicks.
