Ostersunds FK v Osters

These are two sides that had very different pre-season expectations and two sides that are experiencing very different Superettan seasons.

Ostersund have struggled financially for the last few years and their ride to near the summit of Swedish football has been followed by a painful decline. Following relegation from the top-flight last season, they begin this weekend’s round of fixtures sitting firmly at the bottom-of-the-table in the second-tier and seemingly destined for back-to-back relegations.

The hosts come into this on the back of a slender 1-0 defeat away at Jonkopings Sodra. That loss was their fourth successive defeat and they have managed just one victory in their opening 13 matches, scoring just eight goals. They are the only team in the league yet to hit double figures for goals scored.

Osters come into this on the back of a 1-1 draw against an impressive Utsiktens side last weekend. That draw means they have lost just one of their last five matches as they sit tucked inside the top-half. They will be expected to challenge for promotion this season, having narrowly missed out on the top three in 2021. 

Under the management of Srdjan Tufegdzic, Osters have been very strong on the road and that is showed by the underlying data. The visitors have averaged 1.45 expected goals per game away from home and they will be extremely confident of getting past the Superettan’s bottom club – especially when their expected goals against away from home is the lowest in the league at 0.96.

Halmstads v Utsiktens

This is set to be a huge match that could have a lot of consequences at the top of the Swedish second division table, with both sides going for promotion. 

Following relegation from the top-flight last season, Halmstad were always one of the pre-season favourites for promotion back at the first attempt. The home team come into this on the back of seven wins in their opening nine matches as they sit at the top-of-the-table; however, they have since stumbled and have now lost two and drawn one of their last four matches.

Their most recent outing was a 2-1 defeat away to in-form Landskrona last weekend, which kept up their goal scoring habit. They have scored in every Superettan game so far this season and have averaged two goals per game, which is only bettered by two teams. 

They have scored just one more goal, though, than their upcoming opponents, Utsiktens. The visitors come into this in fine form and their 1-1 draw at home to Osters last week extended their unbeaten run of form to seven matches as they begin the weekend’s round of fixtures sitting third in the table.

With four wins and two defeats at home for Halmstad and four wins and two defeats on the road for Utsiktens, it is clear that these are two very evenly matched sides and, with both going for promotion at the top end of the table, it could be quite a cagey match. 

Given that, as well as the fact that only two teams have conceded fewer goals than the visitors this season – and one of those teams is the hosts, Halmstad – this one is unlikely to produce too many clear-cut chances.
