Celtic v St Johnstone
Saturday’s match between Celtic and St Johnstone pits two comparatively in-form teams together. Celtic, of course, are looking good for another Premiership title as they are winning on a relentless basis, but their guests from Perth have pieced together a six-match undefeated sequence themselves, including a home win over Rangers and an away victory over Ross County away from home last weekend.
Naturally, Celtic are strong favourites to win this game, but the handicap odds on Ange Postecoglou’s side look to be too short. Although the Glasgow club are winning matches on a weekly basis, they are not necessarily going so in handsome style. Indeed, just two of the 11 league matches they have played since the international break in September have ended up with them winning by more than two goals.
By contrast, St Johnstone are proving a fierce opponent to break down this season – as has typically been the case with Callum Davidson’s side. Indeed, the Perth Saints have lost only a single league match this season by more than one goal, although it is worth noting that came against Rangers in August.
History certainly points to a home victory, with Celtic winning the last seven between these clubs, with two of these games having been won by three of more. Rarely, though, have St Johnstone have come into such a fixture in as strong a run of form, however. When the sides met at McDiarmid Park in October, Celtic scrambled to an unconvincing late victory. The value here is on the guests.
Dumbarton v East Fife
There is nothing about this fixture that suggests East Fife are capable of upsetting Dumbarton, whose odds on getting the victory are very attractive indeed. Perhaps a lack of match action from the home side is something of a concern given that they have only played once in the last month – a 1-1 draw away to Bonnyrigg – but otherwise the hosts hold a clear upper hand going into Saturday’s match.
For example, the Sons have been formidable at home this season. In seven fixtures, they have claimed an impressive 17 points and are undefeated. They have not been blistering in front of goal, scoring a respectable 14 goals, but on the other hand they have conceded only four times. Furthermore, they won 1-0 away against East Fife when the sides met in the autumn.
The Fifers, meanwhile, are under pressure. They were expected to be fighting for the top spots in the league but are struggling in mid-table. They have already sacked one manager and after Greig McDonald impressed during his interim spell, since being appointed on a full-time basis, results have been disastrous.
The Fifers have failed to win any of their last five matches, including home defeats against strugglers Albion Rovers and Annan, while in their last fixture they were held at home by a Bonnyrigg side that is bottom of the league.
Dumbarton have won their last three home matches against East Fife, all of which have taken place in the last 18 months or so, and the odds on them extending this run to four simply look too good.
