Atalanta v Fiorentina
🏟
Sunday 2nd October – 5:00PM KO
Atalanta host Fiorentina at the Gewiss Stadium in Bergamo on Sunday in a game that’s likely to be anything but friendly. The Bergamaschi and Tuscans have developed something of a rivalry in recent seasons, and it only appears to get more bitter with every meeting of the two.
For Atalanta, the priority will be keeping the pace at the top of the Serie A table having enjoyed an unlikely but strong start to the season, and having spent the international break alongside Napoli as joint leaders. Gian Piero Gasperini’s side are still unbeaten this term, and he’d love nothing more than to extend that run with a win against the fans who give him the most fierce abuse when they face his sides.
Most impressive about Atalanta’s start has been their defensive work. They’ve looked uncharacteristically tight at the back and, although this is a home game, haven’t conceded a single goal on the road. AC Milan have already visited Bergamo and only left with a draw thanks to a late equaliser this season as well.
But the hosts’ home form has been poor for a while now, extending back a couple of seasons. They’ve only won once in their last nine in Bergamo and La Viola had the edge over them last season.
But if anything seems certain it’s that goals will be at a premium here, and under 2.5 being scored appears close to nailed on. If you need a result called, anything but an away win seems decent.

Juventus v Bologna
🏟
Sunday 2nd October – 7:45PM KO
Massimiliano Allegri is under serious pressure at Juventus coach. The Old Lady have been stinking the place out so far this season, and their season is already at risk of being a write-off. With Bologna having their own issues, they may just be the perfect guests in Turin this week.
Juventus tend to beat the lesser sides relatively easily under Allegri – this season aside – and it’s hard to see any other outcome this Sunday night.
Having been questioned during the international break, it’s easy to see Allegri turning his ‘Allegriness’ up to the maximum level possible, shutting out the Rossoblu and claiming an ugly and unconvincing 1-0 or 2-0 win. While it’s tempting to say that they’re a certainty to keep a clean sheet, little about Juventus is a guarantee this year other than their games not being all that much fun to watch.
Bologna themselves have made a coaching change this season, bringing Thiago Motta in to replace Sinisa Mihajlovic. That may spark them into some life, but Juventus should still be coming out on top in this one.
From back to front, however much Allegri wants to deny it, his squad is packed with talent and there are more than enough potential match-winners in there to look beyond them.

Verona v Udinese
🏟
Monday 3rd October – 7:45PM KO
There’s a bit of a funny Monday night game in Veneto as Hellas Verona welcome Udinese, as something of their successors, to the Stadio Marc’Antonio Bentegodi on Monday. The prediction may not make all that much sense after further unpacking either, and there’s a strong amount of feeling and a sixth sense of sorts at play.
Udinese have been flying this year, and the Zebrette have been outperforming not only their own expectations, but seemingly their own on-field performances too.
Occupying a Champions League place ahead of Matchday 8, the Friuliani are far out scoring their expected goals rate so far this season by about 50%. With 15 scored, they’ve got an xG of just 9.4, showing they’re scoring goals when they wouldn’t have expected to. So why shouldn’t that carry over after the break?
Verona are enduring the opposite trend. Having soared under Ivan Juric and Igor Tudor respectively in recent seasons, they’ve fallen off a little and even sold some important players too.
Each of Verona’s last three games have had at least two goals scored, while exactly four have been netted in each of Udinese’s last three, so let’s get behind that trend continuing this weekend.
