Southampton v Chelsea
📅
Kick Off: Tuesday 25th February at 20:15
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea welcome Southampton to Stamford Bridge with the chance to get back to winning ways against the bottom-placed side in the Premier League.
Southampton continued their poor run of form in the Premier League with a 4-0 defeat to Brighton at home last time out. The Saints have won just one of their 13 games on the road in the Premier League this season, losing 10 of these games and conceding 24 goals in the process.
⭐ Chelsea v Southampton Best Bet
Enzo Maresca’s side are easily frustrated. The youthful makeup of the team means that Chelsea can struggle to control their frustration with officials, especially when they’re out of form. Chelsea have been shown 2+ cards in 22 of their 26 Premier League games this season (84.6%).
Chelsea have been shown 2+ cards in each of their last five Premier League games, only managing to win one of these encounters (v West Ham). This inconsistency is brewing irritation amongst Chelsea’s stars which has resulted in this current card record.
Looking across the season as a whole, Chelsea have been shown 74 yellow cards across their 26 Premier League games this campaign (2.84 per game) which is the highest total in the Premier League this season. They face up against a Southampton side that have been shown the second most cautions in the Premier League (72) which should see the card count rise for the home side in a feisty encounter with Chelsea out of form.

Chelsea have seen over 2.5 goals in each of their last five games across all competitions whilst Southampton have seen over 2.5 goals in four of their last five games in all competitions. The initial meeting between the sides produced six goals in a 5-1 Chelsea win.
Chelsea have been shown 74 yellow cards in the Premier League this season, more than any other side in the division. Enzo Maresca’s side can be quick to anger due to the youthful makeup of the squad and have been shown 2+ cards in 22 of their 26 Premier League games this season (84.6%).
Chelsea should be able to get back to winning ways here, this selection has landed in three of Southampton’s last five games with the exceptions coming against Nottingham Forest and Southampton. Chelsea comfortably ran out winners in the initial meeting between these sides and despite a poor run of form, their superior quality should be enough to get the three points here.

🔍 Chelsea v Southampton Players to Watch
🔵 Enzo Fernandez
Enzo Fernandez has been all action in recent weeks, the Chelsea midfielder’s foul involvements of late have been particularly promising. Fernandez’s foul involvements in the Premier League over recent games reads 9,5,5,5,5,6 in a run of successive games that stretches all the way back to the end of December showing how busy the Argentine has been in the heart of Chelsea’s midfield.
He can continue this run in relation of foul involvements against a Southampton side that are actually quite decent when it comes to winning fouls (11.8 per 90) but also commit them at a high rate (12.4 per 90).
Enzo Fernandez to have 4+ Fouls Involvements @ 3.50 on Paddy Power
🔴 Tyler Dibling
Speaking of fouls, Dibling stands out as a player who can cause Chelsea problems. He’s averaging 2.59 fouls won per 90 in the Premier League this season which is a record formed as a result of brilliant ball-carrying skills and operating in dangerous areas which causes Dibling to be hacked down by the opposition.
Dibling was fouled twice in Southampton’s 4-0 defeat to Brighton last time out which shows that he can still win fouls despite Southampton’s poor performances this campaign.

💻 Chelsea v Southampton Form and Tactics
Both these sides look a bit lost at the moment but Chelsea do have the advantage of having significantly superior quality to guide them through this difficult period. Chelsea have only won one of their last five games across all competitions, losing four of these encounters which is a run that has knocked the wind out of the sails of Enzo Maresca’s side who were comfortably in the top four mid-December but now find themselves in seventh place with a real battle forming for the Champions League positions
Southampton have also only managed to win one of their last five games across all competitions which was actually their only away win of the season against fellow relegation candidates Ipswich. Ivan Juric’s side were booed off the park in their last Premier League outing at home against Brighton with the Saints manager seemingly accepting defeat this season, admitting his side ‘are not built to play any style of football’.

With both these sides low on confidence and in poor form, the quality Chelsea have should make the difference here as it did in the initial meeting between the teams where Chelsea ran out 5-1 winners, a result that was slightly skewed by a Southampton red card in the first half.
Interestingly, Chelsea lined up with Pedro Neto through the middle in their 2-1 defeat to Aston Villa last time out. The performance was definitely an improvement on recent weeks by Enzo Maresca’s side even if this didn’t translate into victory. Neto’s ability to occupy the channels made him a real handful for Aston Villa and he was crucial in the goal in occupying this exact role to provide the assist for Fernandez’s opener. Southampton are expected to sit in a low block and take what chances they can on the break but Chelsea will be expecting to get back to winning ways against the worst performing side in the Premier League this season.
