Introduction
Spain have a rich history in the competition, winning their first Euros in 1964 and back-to-back titles in 2008 and 2012. They lost out to eventual champions Italy in the semi-finals in 2020 but come into this tournament above them in the betting as fourth favourites at 7/1.
La Roja will dominate most of the match stats in their games, but much will depend on whether they can get a tune out of their forwards, and how they can overcome the low blocks and defensive tactics that teams will adopt against them.

Tournament Prediction: Quarter-Finals
Historical records can only tell you so much, especially in international football when teams are constantly changing between tournaments. However, when it comes to penalties (as we in England well know), history can certainly weigh heavily on players’ shoulders.
Spain have contested 13 penalty shoot-outs in their history and have lost six of them. However, if you exclude wins in the Confederations Cup and the UEFA Nations League finals and focus solely on World Cups and Euros, they have lost more shoot-outs than they’ve won.
Although a strong case is made for Alvaro Morata as top Spain goalscorer, odds of 3.10 are not the most generous. Lamine Yamal Top Team Goalscorer at 10.0 with Paddy Power, would be my pick in what we anticipate to be a relatively low-scoring group.
Spain Euro 2024 Qualifying Data
📖 How they qualified
The Spanish qualified in spectacular style with seven wins out of eight, the only blot on their copybook being a shock 2-0 defeat away to Scotland in March of 2023. Goals were free-flowing with 25 in those eight games.
Defensively, the Spaniards were very impressive. Taking away the two goals against Scotland, they conceded just three goals in the other seven games.
Considering the ability that Norway have in their ranks and that Georgia qualified for the Euros via the play-offs, this five-team group was not as straightforward as it looked. Having just one bad day at the office and conceding only five in eight games was an impressive and professional job from Konrad De La Fuente’s men.
👕 Players to watch
The enigma that is Alvaro Morata will likely be leading the line for the Spanish and his reputation for being a wasteful and frustrating striker is perhaps unfair. He has 34 goals in 71 appearances for the national team and scored a very respectable four goals in six games in qualifying. You may be surprised to know he also has six goals in ten games at Euros tournaments, alongside three goals in four games at the World Cup Finals.
With 20 goals in 45 games at club level for Atletico Madrid this season, he’s also on course for one of the best seasons in his career. At 31 years of age, this could perhaps be his last Euros and a chance for him to make his doubters eat their words once again.
On the far younger side of the spectrum, one of Europe’s most promising talents is Lamine Yamal. Still just 16 years of age, he already has six caps and two goals for the national side and has clocked up 34 appearances for Barcelona this season. A key highlight was the standing ovation he received at the Bernabeu after a 3-3 friendly draw with Brazil just a month ago.
We often see a fearless and talented youngster cause havoc at the Euros against more experienced heads and Yamal has every chance of being the young star of the tournament.
