FC Sion’s improved form came to a juddering halt last weekend as they were soundly beaten 5-1 by the champions-elect, FC Zurich in the Swiss Super League. Sion had won away to Lugano and held Basel to a draw prior to their visit to the Letzigrund, and they’ll be keen to quickly put that defeat behind them when Young Boys visit the Valais on Sunday. With five games remaining, Paolo Tramezzani’s side are seven points clear of the relegation play-off spot and will be looking for that final boost to ease any lingering concerns regarding their league status next season.
YB finally brought an end to their winless run with a relatively comfortable 3-1 result against Servette in Bern. It was a much-needed pick-me-up after their first such spell, seven games to be exact, since 2013. The three points were all the sweeter coming against opposition that have been something of a “bogey” team, even in times when YB were dominating the division in the past three seasons.
At the Tourbillon, Sion have lost only two of their last eight and have already claimed a victory over YB back in early August, so this will be a difficult prospect for the visitors who haven’t kept a clean sheet in their last seven matches. In the shape of American striker Jordan Siebatcheu (21 in 30 this season), YB have the firepower, but Sion have scored in every head-to-head, so I think they’ll be able to extend that run without a clean sheet for their opponents here.

It doesn’t really get much bigger than this. ‘Der Klassiker’ is a huge game in Swiss football regardless of the scenario that either team might find themselves in, but there is a lot riding on this final meeting of the season between Basel and Zurich. The visitors have the chance to come to St. Jakob-Park and plant their champions flag in what would be a real slap in the face for an FCB side that dominated for much of the last decade. A single point would do it for FCZ and confirm der Stadtclub as title winners for the first time since 2009.
There are many that will cast their mind back to the dramatic scenes of 2006. Back then, a last-minute goal by Mladen Petric on the final day swung the title from Basel to Zurich in one of the most infamous moments in Swiss football history. The destination of the championship doesn’t quite hang in the balance here as it did on that day, but sixteen years on, it is a huge incentive for the players and fans to create a similar moment on enemy territory again.
FCB come into this unbeaten in their last eight and will be determined to ensure FCZ’s champagne remains on ice for at least another weekend. Much like in the previous three matches, I think we’ll see plenty of goals. FCB, driven on by a sellout crowd, have enough quality to breach FCZ, while the champions-elect have been free-scoring themselves and will be keen to wrap up the title.

Luzern v Lausanne

In a weekend that saw all the sides in the bottom three lose their respective matches, there will have been mixed feelings for Luzern. Their defeat to Basel was disappointing, failing to gain any ground on Sion above in the final position of safety, but also remaining seven points clear of the automatic relegation spot ahead of Lausanne. Time is running out though and Luzern need to start picking up more wins if they want to avoid the play-off against the final occupant of second place in the Challenge League.
After going three games unbeaten for only the second time in this campaign, Lausanne were beginning to flirt with the idea of a dramatic dash for the play-off in the closing stages. Instead, they ran into a roadblock in the shape of a 3-1 defeat at Grasshoppers and are now on a perilous footing above the creaking Challenge League trapdoor. That being said, if LS can claim their first away victory since November, they will begin to dream that they can at least earn a second chance via the play-off with a sustained run of victories in what remains of the season.
This is do-or-die for Lausanne’s hopes of avoiding automatic relegation but also for Luzern’s chances of avoiding the play-off too. As such, both teams will go out for the win at the swissporarena on Sunday. FCL scored three against FCSG in their last home match and will be confident of scoring here, while Lausanne and the exciting talent of Zeki Amdouni can also unlock the Luzern defence. I’d go for BTTS here.
