West Ham v Tottenham

📅

Kick Off: Sunday 4th May at 14:00

🏆
Competition: Premier League

This London derby takes place in very unique circumstances, West Ham and Tottenham sit 16th and 17th in the Premier League, only saved from the embarrassment of a potential relegation battle by the underwhelming performances of the three promoted sides.

Tottenham will have other priorities with the second leg of their Europa League semi final tie against Boro Glimt to come during the week while West Ham will be hoping to find some consistency before the end of the season so they can start next campaign on a more positive note.

Neither of these sides are particularly convincing at the back, and their recent results back up this claim. Tottenham have seen this selection land in four of their last five games across all competitions, including their first-leg victory over Bodo Glimt in the Europa League.

West Ham have seen this land in three of their last five games across all competitions. Most worryingly for Potter, West Ham are on a run of seven games without a win in the Premier Leagu,e and while there isn’t the immediate jeopardy of relegation, Potter risks losing the dressing room if this rot goes on too long - the Hammers have seen BTTS in five of these seven games.

The initial meeting between these sides produced five goals as Tottenham ran out 4-1 winners. It was a pretty open game with both sides reaching double digits for shots, and suggests that this match, mainly contested on pride alone, will be quite entertaining.

🔍 West Ham v Tottenham Players to Watch

🟣 Jarrod Bowen

Bowen has been West Ham’s one shining light this season.

He’s registered 16 goal contributions across his 30 appearances in the Premier League this season (9 goals, 7 assists) which are really solid numbers for a player that has only seen his side score 39 goals in top flight this season - Bowen has been directly involved in 41% of the goals that West Ham have scored in the Premier League this season.

Bowen comes into this game in decent form, having registered four goal contributions across his last five Premier League appearances, including two assists against Brighton last time out.

Lucas Bergvall

Bergvall has won 17 fouls across his 27 Premier League appearances this season, 11 of these have been starts, taking his average to 1.27 fouls won per 90.

Bergvall didn’t feature in the initial meeting between the sides but each of Kulusevski, Bissouma, and Maddison were hauled down at least once in Tottenham’s 4-1 win over the Hammers, with the Tottenham midfield drawing six fouls in total from the East London side who committed 15 fouls overall in the game.

Bergvall was brought down on three occasions in Liverpool’s 5-1 win over Tottenham last time out.

💻 West Ham v Tottenham Form and Tactics

West Ham have struggled to adapt to Potter’s style, it’s possible that the former Chelsea manager has been too bold in trying to communicate his intricate system halfway through the season, which has left the Hammers a little disorganised at the back and quite blunt going forward. Only Everton and the three relegated sides have scored fewer goals than West Ham in the Premier League this season, which has been a thorn in their side, especially in this recent run of form that sees them in the last seven Premier League games.

Tottenham will be focusing on their Europa League semi-final second leg tie against Bodo Glimt. In the Premier League, Ange Postecoglou’s side have lost each of their last three Premier League games - all sandwiched between Europa League ties, so you can see where the priority is for Tottenham at the moment.

Tottenham line up in a 4-3-3 shape but expect some rotation from Ange, especially to the backline, which has been chopped and changed all season. The midfield battle here could take centre stage, there are three central midfielders in both systems, which means that the fouls and duels numbers from the middle of the pitch are likely to be high.
