We proved at the World Cup in 2022 that there is always value to be found backing
a longshot in international tournaments, and with Group E looking wide-open, this may be the place to look for an underdog who could shock the continent. Our dark horse and longshot tips will help you decide which sides are worth exploring, whilst our Players to Watch Out For article will help you get to know the lesser-known players who may carry their nations to unexpected heights.
Romania were surprise winners of Group I in qualification, comfortably besting a Switzerland side which most expected to run away with top spot.
They are the second-lowest ranked winners of a qualifying group according to the FIFA World Rankings, placing 48th, and they can mostly put their qualification down to a fortunate draw which saw them up against Israel, Belarus, Kosovo and Andorra, along with an out-of-sorts Swiss side.
Winning just six games out of 10 on their road to the tournament, they have once again secured a fortunate draw here, landing in a group with Belgium, Slovakia and Ukraine. They can certainly secure a spot in the next round with four points likely to be the target from the two games against Slovakia and Ukraine and backing them to qualify for the knockout stages at 1.57 looks a worthwhile option.
Even a second-placed finish would likely only result in a clash with the Netherlands however, so the last 16 is expected to be the upper limit for Romania. There are some players to watch out for here however, with Atletico Madrid backup goalkeeper Horaţiu Moldovan having the third-best save percentage of any goalkeeper in qualifying at 86.2%.
Moldovan made four or more saves in five of his eight games in the qualifiers, and had a 100% save rate in four of his eight games, along with five clean sheets from these eight. With an extremely weak group still managing 3.50 shots on target per 90 against Romania, and much tougher games expected here, the goalkeeper saves market is certainly one to consider when Moldovan is involved.
