2023 US Open betting preview: Will Scottie Scheffler deliver a Hollywood blockbuster?
The year’s third major takes place this week with the world’s best golfers competing at the US Open. Scottie Scheffler is the favourite with the world number one expected to contend heavily in California. It will be the first time all of the top stars have competed together since the shock announcement that the PGA Tour and DP World Tour will merge with Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund. This bombshell opens the door for LIV rebels to rejoin the PGA Tour but all the focus is on Los Angeles Country Club this week for a Hollywood blockbuster.
The North Course will be unfamiliar to most of the field having never previously hosted a major. This 7,400-yard par 70 has a wide variety of holes featuring five par threes and three par fives. A relatively wide parkland course, it will play firm and fast with no rain recently in LA and this will undoubtedly add to the difficulty for the players. Avoiding the rough and playing from the fairway will be needed to hold the greens and strong scrambling will be required if out of position. A dry forecast with the temperature rising should ensure a fiery examination in a tournament dubbed the toughest test in golf.
Scheffler looks hard to keep out of the frame with the American finishing in the top five of his last four tournaments. He is a tempting option but 13-2 is certainly not generous odds. John Rahm will be dangerous, with his stellar record in California, but he has looked short of his best in his last two starts.

2023 US Open golf tips
Brooks Koepka to win (E/W)

Brooks Koepka is first up for our US Open golf tips. The American stormed to victory at last month’s PGA Championship and there is no reason to ignore him as a strong alternative to the two favourites. Koepka landed his fifth major title with his two-shot triumph at Oak Hill last month. It has been on the cards after his near miss at the Masters in the spring and Koepka is undoubtedly the top dog in the majors following his return to fitness.
No player enters a major with as much confidence and self-belief as Koepka. His focus in the biggest events is unrivalled and Koepka will be relishing the chance to potentially return to the PGA Tour, with more majors in his trophy cabinet. He landed back-to-back US Opens in 2017 and 2018, with success at Erin Hills followed by a win at Shinnecock Hills. Koepka has three other top fours at this major and comes in well-rested following his success at Oak Hill. It would be a shock if he fails to contend this weekend and Koepka has to be backed at 11/1.
Viktor Hovland win (E/W)

Viktor Hovland has served his major apprenticeship and is ready to get his hands on one of the biggest titles. Hovland contended at each of the last three majors and this experience has to be an advantage as he looks for his breakthrough. The Norway star tied for fourth at last year’s Open Championship and he has taken this momentum into 2023. Hovland finished joint seventh at Augusta National and he impressed again last month, with his runner-up spot at the PGA.
Hovland has significantly improved his short game and more confidence on the greens was critical in helping him win the Memorial Tournament on his last start. Victory at Muirfield Village, in US Open-style conditions, is ideal preparation for this week and sets him up perfectly for LA Country Club. Ranked sixth for total driving, Hovland’s long game class should enable him to contend again at 16-1 each way and is a promising option as one of our US Open golf tips.
Max Homa to win (E/W)

Max Homa has a remarkable record in California and the popular local has a great chance of challenging for his first major title this weekend. Homa has plenty of experience of playing at LA Country Club and holds the course record, after shooting 61 in 2013. He also has a superb record at nearby Riviera, where he won the Genesis Invitational in 2021 and was runner-up back in February.
Homa’s comfort level in LA is obvious and four of his six PGA Tour titles have come in California. His latest success was at the Farmers Insurance Open at the start of the year and Homa comes in fresh, after a break following his top-ten finish at Colonial last month. Fifth for strokes gained putting and second for par three scoring average is a lethal combination for Homa who looks a value bet at 25-1 each way to produce a fairytale Hollywood ending.
Collin Morikawa to win (E/W)

Collin Morikawa looks like another likely contender with the two-time major champion expected to challenge in LA. Morikawa’s first major arrived in California at Harding Park in 2020 and he has a strong record in the state. The 26-year-old was sixth at Riviera earlier in the year and also has positive memories of this course. Morikawa won all four matches for the US at the Walker Cup in 2017 and his experience of LA Country Club has to be beneficial. Renowned for his ball striking, Morikawa ranks second for strokes gained approaching the green and fifth for tee to green. Assuming he has shaken off the back injury which forced him out of the Memorial only two shots off the lead, Morikawa rates a strong each-way selection at 28-1.
Cam Davis top 40 finish

An Australian worth supporting is Cam Davis with this rising star increasingly comfortable in the majors. Davis raced through the field to land a tie for fourth at the PGA which has set him up strongly for his US Open debut. Firm and fast fairways will hold no fear for Davis who posted top 10s at the Players and the RBC Heritage this season. A top 40 finish at 11-8 looks more than achievable for this emerging talent.
Min Woo Lee top 20 finish

Min Woo Lee is developing into a top-class performer and the 24-year-old Australian will be licking his lips at the fiery conditions in LA. Sixth place at the Players Championship in March was a huge result and he backed this up with a tie for 18th at last month’s PGA Championship. Lee was also 14th on his Masters debut last year and this world-class scrambler has the talent to notch another top 20 at 7-2.
Denny McCarthy top 10 finish

Denny McCarthy is one of the best putters in the world and his tidy short game can help him secure a top 10 finish in California. McCarthy was pipped to the title at Muirfield Village by Hovland a couple of weeks ago, as he narrowly missed out on a breakthrough victory. But he was bullish about his chances at LA Country Club, where he has played numerous times before, and a repeat of last season’s US Open where he finished seventh looks realistic at 8-1.
