Belgium held out for a tentative goalless draw against Ukraine, to secure second place in Group E. They might’ve been relieved to qualify given that all four teams in their group ended on four points, a tough round of 16 draw awaits them at the Merkur Spiel-Arena in Dusseldorf.
France also finished second in their group, having been held to a draw in their final fixture. A masked Kylian Mbappe returned to the starting XI, seemingly unaffected by his injury as he got on the scoresheet from the spot. The winner of this tie will face either Portugal or Slovenia in the quarter-finals.
France v Belgium Best Bets
Mbappe has been directly involved in both goals scored by France so far. He put in the cross which Austrian defender Max Wöber headed into his own net and converted a penalty in France’s final group game against Poland.
Extending the sample size to the June friendlies, France beat Luxembourg 3-0, and Mbappe was once again heavily involved with two assists and one goal. Mbappe to score or assist looks incredibly good value, given his importance to Didier Deschamps.
France accrued 19 shots against Poland, and have managed at least 14 shots in all three games at Euro 2024. They’ve created chances in abundance, but have struggled with finishing.
Despite keeping two clean sheets from three games, Belgium have shown a vulnerability in transition and have conceded on average 12.3 shots per game from their group stage fixtures. France to have 14 or more shots stands out as a low line.

📊 France Form and Stats
France were not at their best in the group stages, with just two goals in three games – one was an own goal, and the other a penalty. But chance creation hasn’t been a problem.
France have accumulated the second-most expected goals at Euro 2024, only behind Croatia, with 5.7 xGF. That level of underperformance in finishing chances is unlikely to continue for a side with the depth of attacking quality at France’s disposal.
Against Poland in matchday three, Mbappe was able to return from his nose injury and complete the full 90. He scored the only goal for Les Bleus, and was heavily involved in the final third – he racked up six shots in total, five of which hit the target for a total of 1.31 xG on his own.
📊 Belgium Form and Stats
Behind France, Belgium have also underperformed in their finishing according to expected goals. They have scored two goals from 4.2 xGF. Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku is still yet to open his goalscoring account at Euro 2024, despite having seven shots on target – the most of any other player in the competition.
Koen Casteels was on hand to make four saves against Ukraine to ensure the game stayed goalless and has been a consistent performer so far in place of Thibaut Courtois.
He made three saves against Slovakia in matchday one, and four saves against Romania after that. The 31-year-old, who plays in Saudi Arabia, will have to once again be on top form against France on Monday.
⚔️ France v Belgium Head-to-Head
France and Belgium last met in the 2021 Nations League semi-final, and it was a thriller in Turin. Belgium took a two-goal lead in the first half, courtesy of Romelu Lukaku and Yannick Carrasco, with both goals assisted by Kevin de Bruyne.
Karim Benzema pulled one back for Les Bleus on the hour mark, before Mbappe equalised from the spot. Lukaku thought he had saved Belgium’s blushes late on, only for his goal to be ruled out due to offside.
Theo Hernandez went on to deliver the hammer blow in the 90th minute, France progressed to the Nations League final and secured the honours by winning 2-1 against Spain. France and Belgium also met in the 2018 World Cup semi-final. Once again it was France who prevailed, 1-0, and went on to lift the trophy.
