Napoli v Juventus Cheat Sheet
Napoli v Juventus
Serie A fixtures don’t come much bigger than Napoli v Juventus. It’s a game packed full of bitterness and spice, and one of the most hotly contested on the Italian peninsula despite it not being one of the more traditional derbies like Juventus v Inter, AC Milan v Inter, Roma v Napoli, and so many more. The game is North v South, it sees complete opposites collide and, this season, it’s 1st v 2nd in the Serie A table.
The excitement around this week’s game is reminiscent of their title showdown in Turin at the back-end of the 2017/18 season, when Maurizio Sarri’s side looked as though they would finally end Juventus’ long run of Serie A titles. Then, Kalidou Koulibaly headed in a 90th-minute winner and Napoli’s name looked set to be carved into the Scudetto. But the Partenopei crumbled afterwards, losing inexplicably to Fiorentina, and became the first and only side to amass 91 points in Serie A and still fall short.
This season, Luciano Spalletti has Napoli fans as excited as they were then. For the first time since, there’s a sense in Campania that something big is happening. Nobody plays like Napoli in Italy, and perhaps not even in Europe, and they’ll want to put themselves 10 points clear of Juventus.
Nothing is ever guaranteed with Napoli though, and less so there than anywhere. Superstition will prevent them from really talking about a title push, even if they go 10 points clear of Juventus this weekend. Massimiliano Allegri’s side, after all, know how to win titles more than anybody else, and they’ve been showing a real mean side at the back – not conceding in eight straight wins – to show that they might just end their short, two-year wait and once again be crowned Italian champions.
Juventus don’t concede goals – only seven have been scored against them so far this term – and although Napoli are Serie A’s hottest attack with an impressive 39 goals from 17 games, their defensive efforts have been impressive as well as they’ve let just 13 goals be scored against them.
Since losing to AC Milan as far back as October, Juventus haven’t conceded a single Serie A goal – winning eight on the bounce to nil. In that same period, Napoli have only conceded more than once on two occasions domestically.
With Italy’s meanest defences facing off, it’s hard to see this game featuring a hatful of chances, and we should be expecting a low-scoring affair at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. That, though, doesn’t mean that we won’t have plenty of excitement on show.
Few players love a shot more than Matteo Politano, and Spalletti will likely be willing to encourage his winger to try his luck on Friday night. Juventus’ backline don’t give too much away in the form of clear-cut chances, so Victor Osimhen may have a quieter night than he would like.
The Nigerian’s presence up top will keep Juventus’ defenders occupied though, as will Khvicha Kvaratskhelia’s. That should leave a little more space for some of the players perceived to be slightly less of a threat, and Politano is one of those.
With space to play into, Politano has it in him to frighten any defence. Decision-making isn’t always a strength of his though, and he fancies himself to shoot from positions where he might be better served looking for a pass. On Friday, expect him to hit the target from range if Napoli don’t – and they likely won’t – find it easy to break Juventus’ defence down.
This is the pick of the three that will bring the nicest odds, as Stanislav Lobotka isn’t often in the referee’s bad books. Against Juventus, though, he’s going to face a battle that no other side has presented him with so far this season, with perhaps only Jose Mourinho’s Roma falling into that same top-tier as Allegri’s Old Lady of being nasty to play against. In that game against the Giallorossi, he picked up his only booking of the Serie A season.
If there is to be a winner in this game, then midfield is likely to play a huge part in determining that. More so than quality, discipline will be key. Allegri will no doubt drive that into his players and will have been doing so all week.
If Napoli are ahead and looking to hold onto a lead, Lobotka is the kind of player to take a booking for the team and stop a Juventus attack from building momentum. If it becomes a scrap in the centre, he’s likely to be involved in some way as well.
