Sportivo Ameliano v Guarani
Sportivo Ameliano have just one win in four matches but it was by far their hardest stint of the season facing Olimpia, Libertad and Cerro Porteño in that run of games. Guaraní have also played Olimpia and Libertad in the last three games and got through it without conceding as they remain in 2nd place.
Humberto Garcia saw his team outplayed in the first half against Cerro Porteño but fought well in the second half, coming close to an equalizer. It was a strong reply having been blown away to Libertad the previous match. Franco Ortellado returned from suspension and had a marked effect on the defence, while Rubén Escobar got a rare start up front. The latter was replaced by Elías Sarquis who will surely be considered from the off while Fredy Vera can also return having missed the last game, ineligible against his parent club Cerro.
Hernán Rodrigo López spoke about the huge physical exertion from his side in their goalless draw to league leaders Libertad. Néstor Camacho only lasted 19 minutes while midfielders Gil Romero and Luis Martínez are doubts. Should Camacho not make the game then much of the attacking burden will fall on the broad shoulders of Federico Santander, the former Bologna striker scored in the last match against Ameliano.
Guaraní have managed to find the net in all their away games this season with the exception of their first match against the best defence in the league (Libertad). Sportivo Ameliano have only one clean sheet in their temporary home, the Martin Torres stadium, and have conceded over 1.5 in their last three home games. Despite plenty of changes offensively Guaraní have usually managed to find a solution in front of goal which has them sitting in 2nd place.
Rionegro Aguilas v Boyaga Chico
It’s a top of the table clash on Monday morning, between two tiny Colombian teams with just a handful of fans and both punching well above their weight this season. But only one of these sides has serious title ambitions.
Rionegro Aguilas went close last season before collapsing spectacularly to miss out on reaching the final by one point. When manager Leonel Alvarez stepped down to manage Peruvian side Cienciano, it was feared the club would return to its usual mid-table status. But instead they have stepped up to a new level.
In came a largely unknown manager, Lucas González, who had previously been in charge of Atlético Nacional’s U-17s, following a spell coaching in Spain and Australia. And he’s been a breath of fresh air both for the club and the league. It’s clear that he’s a studious and serious coach who has accumulated lots of external influences to get Rionegro playing some of the best football in the division.
It has helped that they’ve not had many injuries and players like young star midfielder Kevin Castaño are in exceptional form. But many in Colombia are already talking of Gonzalez as future Colombia manager – with just 13 matches as a coach under his belt!
With three wins out of their last four, Aguilas are joint top of the league and boast the best home record of any team. But they do play a high-risk game that ensures that goals flow at both ends. In fact, in seven out of their last eight matches there have been at least three goals.
By committing so many men forward in their attacks, they are occasionally left exposed on the counter. Right-back Mateo Puerta is constantly seeking to bomb forward and join two of their three central midfielders in overwhelming opposition defences. It’s a recipe for entertainment and positive football.
That’s something that can’t be said for opponents Chicó who started the season well due to most of their fixtures being at home against weaker opposition. They are rigidly organised, quite defensive and deadly from set pieces. But central defender Henry Plazas, a key cog in their system, is suspended for this game, and it’s hard to see how they will be able to contain Rionegro.
Your best option, though, is to lump on goals, with over 2.5 available at the tasty price of 2.55.
IFK Goteborg v Malmo
IFK Göteborg’s torrid time continues, with fan unrest at the club, little direction from the board and a dire start to the season continuing last weekend with a resounding 2-0 loss to Kalmar FF. They were outplayed for large parts of the match and only mustered 7 shots all game long, half of Kalmar’s total.
With a rudderless ship, there is little hope of improvement on the horizon. A manager with a clear philosophy is badly needed to give the team some direction and the fans a glimmer of hope, otherwise this season could be a real struggle for Sweden’s most successful club.
The attack has been toothless despite the IFK squad possessing plenty of quality, with little creativity in a rigid 4-4-2 system meaning the forwards are feeding off scraps. At the back, meanwhile, they are too easily scythed through, with little cohesion in a newly composed defensive lineup.
In addition, starting goalkeeper Pontus Dahlberg coming off injured in the first half against Kalmar didn’t help matters. Young Adam Benediktsson deputised well but isn’t of the same calibre yet, and while it remains to be seen how long Dahlberg is out for, his absence will be a real blow.
Malmö look stronger and more settled than last season, claiming a maximum total of 6 points thus far. They did however face a stern test away at Brommapojkarna last game, being handily outplayed in the first part of the game, and in earnest probably deserved to be more than a goal down at the break.
BP took advantage of space in front, behind and wide of the defensive line, with Malmö often sticking with the back three they utilised in the opener despite Nielsen and Busanello being back in the XI.
The latter often pushed up high with Tinnerholm tucking in, leaving too many gaps to be exploited. In the second period they got a better hold of possession and managed to push the hosts too deep to have any viable out ball, with Tinnerholm given more license to overlap. It paid dividends eventually, with their quality shining through as they killed the game off with two late goals.
They will need to be better at preventing counter attacks against more lethal sides, but don’t expect that to happen here against a lacklustre IFK Göteborg side. The away team is too well-drilled and has the strongest squad in the league bar none.
Fiorentina v Atalanta
The Monday night offering in Serie A tends to feature two sides lower down the table but this time, there is a very intriguing game between two sides with some great attacking players in their ranks.
Fiorentina are in quite remarkable form at the moment both in Serie A and also in both cup competitions. They took a big step towards the Europa Conference League semi-finals on Thursday as they beat Lech Poznan 4-1 and they are also in control of their two-legged Coppa Italia semi-final against Cremonese.
They will be thinking that this game is an opportunity to show that they should be up near Atalanta in the table, who currently sit in sixth place after hitting an inconsistent run of form.
With players like Arthur Cabral, Jonathan Ikone, Nico Gonzalez and Giacomo Bonaventura in very good form, expect Vincenzo Italiano’s side to find the net on home turf on Monday.
On the other side, you can never bet against Atalanta scoring, even if their identity under Gian Piero Gasperini is being lost somewhat this season. With players like Rasmus Hojlund, Ademola Lookman, Jeremie Boga, Duvan Zapata and Luis Muriel capable of creating something in an instant, this game can’t be viewed as a simple win for an in-form Fiorentina side.
Leeds United v Liverpool
The Monday night football comes from Elland Road this week and it’ll be Liverpool who are the visitors here. This fixture is set to be an entertaining one and goals, goals, goals are to be expected having crunched the numbers!
The Whites were last in action against Palace at home, a game they were taken to the cleaners by Roy Hodgson’s men! A 5-1 defeat was the outcome but they did again manage to find the back of the net, something they’ve continued to do regularly.
This bodes well for our selection of BTTS as a home goal is a must for us here. So, it’s now five matches on the trot where this exact bet has returned a winner in Leeds PL matches. With this in mind and the fact they have also notched in eight of their last ten on home soil, I certainly feel there’s a lot of backbone to this selection.
The goals have come from all over the pitch for hosts this season but the man in form at this moment in time is Jack Harrison. The English winger is in line for another start and he’s got three goals to his name in the previous five games, as well as picking up an assist!
One other to bear in mind is the clubs top PL scorer Rodrigo, he has a total of eleven goals but is often utilised from the bench. In summary, I feel there’s more than enough ammunition in the side to score on at least one occasion and with so much on the line in terms of survival, I’m banking on them finding the back of the net.
Liverpool arrive here on the back of a Desmond at Anfield last weekend against potential title winners Arsenal. It was an absolute thriller for the neutral and here’s hoping for a similar result on Monday night. The Reds have stumbled throughout this campaign, now finding themselves down in 8th position in the table.
On the plus side, they do have a near fully fit squad to pick from and the possible return of Luis Diaz is a positive. The player I have to touch on here is the ever present Mo Salah, the Egyptian has still hit home 13 goals thus far and his current form is excellent. In his previous nine matches, he’s racked up eleven goal contributions, 7G & 4A! Now facing a team who have been leaking goals, there’s no doubt he’ll be a threat in attack.
A final stat I want to mention is that Liverpool have scored seventeen times on the bounce against Leeds in the H2H’s. This is another reason to boost our optimism of the selection ahead of kick off.
All in all, I cannot call this one in terms of a result but the play of BTTS looks an extremely solid one. Back this and we’ll have a real good run for our money!
