EFL Weekend Preview - Matchday 40

There are 15 EFL matches taking place on Saturday, including Exeter v Leyton Orient, Wycombe v Port Vale, Crewe v Oldham, and Salford v MK Dons. Here's some insight into these four key clashes.

Exeter City are in freefall. The Grecians have lost five successive matches since Gary Caldwell's departure and sit above the relegation zone on goal difference alone, having offered little in a 2-0 defeat to Wigan Athletic last time out. Leyton Orient, by contrast, arrive having won four games in a row - including victories over play-off chasers Wycombe Wanderers and Stevenage. Richie Wellens' side have improved significantly away from home, winning three of their last four on the road, and will see this as a chance to secure their League One status for next season, against a home side completely stripped of confidence.

Port Vale's midweek defeat at Doncaster Rovers has effectively ended their survival hopes under Jon Brady. The Valiants sit 11 points from safety, and although they have two games in hand on most sides around them, the gap looks insurmountable. Brady has shown some improvement in performances since taking charge, but Vale have the fourth worst away record in the division and have lost three of their last four on the road.

Wycombe face them sitting four points off the play-off places, with several rivals having no fixture this weekend. Wanderers had won four straight at Adams Park before a 2-1 loss to Luton Town a fortnight ago, and Mike Duff's side will know that three points against the division's bottom club is the minimum required to keep their top-six ambitions alive.

Crewe Alexandra kept their own play-off push on track with a 4-0 win at Shrewsbury Town last weekend and now trail seventh place by two points. Lee Bell's side have scored in 10 of their last 12 matches and conceded in three of their last four at home. They host an Oldham Athletic side who lead the League Two form table over the last 10 games, remaining unbeaten across that run and keeping clean sheets in eight of those matches.

Sixth-placed Salford City host second-placed MK Dons in another significant promotion clash. Both sides carry identical form over their last five games - four wins and one defeat - with each looking to bounce back. Salford have scored in six of their last seven home games, and goals have arrived in 10 of their 19 home matches this season. MK Dons arrive as the strongest away side in League Two, going unbeaten in 16 of 19 road trips.

EFL Weekend Key Stats - Matchday 40

  • Exeter have lost five consecutive matches since Gary Caldwell left the club.

  • Leyton Orient have won three of their last four away matches in League One.

  • Port Vale are 11 points from safety in League One with two games in hand on most rivals.

  • Wycombe won four consecutive home games at Adams Park before losing 2-1 to Luton Town.

  • Crewe have scored in 10 of their last 12 League Two matches and conceded in three of their last four at home.

  • Oldham are unbeaten in their last 10 League Two matches, keeping clean sheets in eight of them.

  • MK Dons have gone unbeaten in 16 of 19 away matches in League Two this season, scoring in 18 of those games.
