England v Japan Match Preview
England face Japan on Tuesday, it's expected to be much closer to full strength after Thomas Tuchel rotated heavily in last week's 1-1 draw with Uruguay. Harry Kane and Jude Bellingham are among those set to return, with Tuchel likely to field something closer to his first-choice XI as England begin to sharpen their preparations for the World Cup.
Despite keeping a clean sheet throughout qualifying, England's defence has shown vulnerabilities under Tuchel against stronger opposition. They conceded three goals to Senegal in a friendly last year and were breached by Uruguay from the penalty spot last week. Japan arrive in good form, unbeaten across their last five matches and they got on the scoresheet in each of them, including against Scotland at the weekend.
Kane is expected to start having been rested against Uruguay. England's all-time top scorer with 78 goals in 112 caps, he averaged 4.10 shots and 2.10 shots on target per 90 across eight qualifying starts, while his Bundesliga numbers this season stand at 2.66 shots on target per 90.
Anderson is another likely starter and arguably one of the first names on the team sheet. The Newcastle midfielder complements Declan Rice and Bellingham effectively and brings a profile England have lacked. He drew 68 fouls in 31 Premier League starts this season at 2.21 per 90, with his touch volume increasing notably on international duty, where he averages over 120 touches per 90 during qualifying and has drawn fouls at a rate of 1.95 per 90 across four starts.
Japan are expected to line up in a 3-4-3, as they did in their win over Scotland, and will look to make the most of limited possession by hitting the Three Lions on the counter.
