📈 Bosnia v Italy Form & Stats
This is a massive game for Italy, they are favourites to win but that doesn’t quite take into account the background and psychological block that the Italians may be facing here. Italy have not appeared at a World Cup since 2014, losing qualifiers to reach the last two tournaments in 2018 and 2022. This has put a mountain of pressure on the Italians to qualify this time around, and they are faced by an awkward and equally desperate opponent in Bosnia.
Italy probably would have expected to face Wales in this final, though Bosnia definitely are an easier opponent - but that doesn’t mean that Italy can take them lightly. Bosnia showed real resilience to hold Wales to a 1-1 draw after extra time and hold their nerve on penalties. They are also at home for this contest, so Italy won’t have the comfort of home advantage as they did for their win over Northern Ireland.
That being said, Italy did manage to win three of their four away matches during qualifying, netting 10 goals across these games but also conceding eight. This lines up with Bosnia failing to keep a clean sheet across their last six matches, suggesting that this contest is likely to see goals at both ends and a high goal count overall - these markets have been priced quite generously and are worth exploring further.
📔 Bosnia v Italy Formation & Team News
Bosnia set up in a 4-4-2 against Wales last week, and I expect them to continue with that shape here. Bosnia put in a classic away performance against Wales last week, restricting the number of touches they had in the box and coming through the tie with just 31% possession and 20 fouls committed.
It’s clear that Bosnia try to break up the game as much as possible from their foul numbers. They averaged 17.7 fouls committed per game during qualifying, more than any other side, and their foul count against Wales last time out shows that this aggression hasn’t really gone anywhere. They will also be aware of the pressure on Italy to qualify, and make the game as bitty and stop-start as possible.
Italy will line up in a 3-5-2, with the strongest part of the side being the midfield. Barella, Locatelli and Tonali are all experienced and capable operators, and Italy also have depth in this area to call upon from the bench. Tonali was particularly impressive in Italy’s win over Northern Ireland last week, registering a goal and an assist as Italy came away 2-0 winners.
