FA Cup Semi-Final Preview

Manchester City and Southampton meet in one FA Cup semi-final at Wembley, while Chelsea take on Leeds United in the other, setting up what promises to be a compelling double-header.

Pep Guardiola's side arrive in superb form, having won their last 5 games without conceding, beating Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea along the way. Much of City's resurgence in the second half of the season has been attributed to their January transfer window activity, with the arrivals of Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo widely credited for sharpening the squad. City also have an strong record at Wembley, most recently beating Arsenal 2-0 in the EFL Cup final. Guardiola is likely to rotate given City played at Burnley on Wednesday and face Everton next week, with James Trafford expected to start in goal as he has done throughout the cup run. Phil Foden, Tijjani Reijnders and Rayan Ait-Nouri may all come into contention for starting berths.

Southampton have been one of the stories of the season under Tonda Eckert, having turned around a difficult start under Will Still to put themselves firmly in play-off contention in the Championship. Eckert's side are expected to set up in a similar fashion to their recent matches against Fulham and Arsenal, though they will need some fortune at times given the gap in quality. Flynn Downes misses out through suspension after accumulating too many yellow cards in the FA Cup. City's 4-2-4 defensive shape, built around Guehi and Zaid Khusanov at centre back with the full backs pushing high, may offer Southampton opportunities to create overloads if they are willing to go direct.

The second semi-final sees Chelsea arrive at Wembley in poor shape, having lost their last 5 Premier League matches without scoring, dropping to 8th in the table and 7 points off the Champions League places. Liam Rosenior was dismissed following a 3-0 defeat at Brighton and Hove Albion on Tuesday, with Calum McFarlane stepping back into the interim role for the remainder of the season. Chelsea have gone 12 Premier League matches without a clean sheet, conceding 2 or more goals in 6 of those games. McFarlane is expected to revert to the 4-2-3-1 formation he used earlier in the season, though his options are limited, with Benoit Badiashile, Estevao, Filip Jorgensen, Jamie Gittens, Levi Colwill and Reece James all ruled out. Cole Palmer and Joao Pedro missed the Brighton defeat but are hoped to be available on Sunday.

Leeds head to Wembley in considerably better spirits, having reached the 40-point mark with a late equaliser in a 2-2 draw at Bournemouth on Wednesday. That result extended Daniel Farke's side's unbeaten run to 5 matches in the Premier League, with the Whites winning 2 of their last 3. Leeds have been building momentum since switching to a 3-4-1-2 formation towards the end of 2025 and are not expected to change that system. Anton Stach remains the only injury absentee, while Facundo Buonanotte is ineligible to face his parent club.
