It’s been a disastrous season for Bristol Rovers, who were amongst the sides at the head of the League Two winners market before a ball was kicked, and have surely put pay to many antepost accumulators (not mine, honest!).
A Rovers return for Darrell Clarke failed to have the desired effect, and he departed in mid December with The Gas in the relegation zone. Step forward, everyone’s favourite lower league blusterer, Steve Evans, to try and steer Rovers to safety.
He’s not had the impact everyone was expecting, averaging just a point per game through fourteen league matches, but that is enough to have been the 18th best record during that spell, which has taken Rovers up to 20th, four points above the drop zone. They have become more ‘goalsy’ since then, with both teams scoring in four of their last five outings.
Crewe are the visitors to The Memorial Stadium, with four wins in their last seven enough to see them occupying the last play-off spot. They’re pretty reliable goal scorers, having found the net in eight of their last ten games. Over the course of the season, 60% of their fixtures have seen both teams find the net, including when these two sides met in Steve Evans’ first game in charge in December, when the game ended 1-1.
