I’m expecting a fairly tight affair at the Allianz Stadium on Sunday night, but I still think there is scope for a couple of goals.
All but one of Juventus’ opening nine Serie A matches of the season have produced over 1.5 goals, including each of their 4 fixtures in front of their own supporters.
Further encouragement comes from the fact that all 3 of the Old Lady’s matches in the Europa League this season have broken the over 2.5 goal barrier.
As for Napoli, 7 of their opening nine league games this season have featured at least 2 goals.
Notably, the Partenopei have covered the over 1.5 goal line on their own in three of their five away games, including a 3-2 defeat at Inter Milan and Wednesday night’s 4-1 win at Monza.
On top of all that, Allegri’s men have also been involved in a couple of high-scoring Champions League shootouts this season, including last week’s 4-3 win over Bodo/Glimt.
Back Scott McTominay to register at least one shot on target against Juventus on Sunday night.
The Napoli attacking midfielder has been in impressive form following a spell on the sidelines, scoring twice against Bodo/Glimt in the Champions League last week before doing so again against Roma in Serie A last weekend.
His shot output is what has caught my eye, racking up 14 attempts across his last 3 Serie A outings and 9 across Napoli’s last 2 Champions League matches.
A closer look at the numbers shows that McTominay has hit the target in 5 of his six appearances for Napoli since returning from injury earlier this month, registering at least 2 shots on target in 2 of his last three outings.
The Scotland international is now averaging an impressive 1.42 shots on target per game in Serie A this season.
With that in mind, he looks well placed to test Juventus goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario during this showdown.
Rasmus Hojlund is a player I always like to target in the fouls market, and I’m backing the Napoli ace to overstep the mark at least once against Juventus.
The Danish forward leads the line with plenty of aggression and physicality, which often sees him come in for close attention from match officials.
Indeed, Hojlund was penalised once in Napoli’s 3-3 draw with Roma last Saturday, having also given away a free-kick in last month’s 1-1 draw away at Fiorentina.
That tendency has been just as evident in Europe, with Hojlund committing at least 1 foul in all three of Napoli’s Champions League matches this season, including multiple offences in their 1-0 defeat to Arsenal.
He is likely to contest plenty of aerial duels with Juventus defender Bremer, who has been fouled in each of his last two Serie A outings and was also brought down in the Old Lady’s 1-1 draw with AC Milan earlier this season.
Looking at the form book ahead of this heavyweight clash, I think Napoli look worth backing to avoid defeat on Sunday night.
The visitors should arrive in good spirits after claiming a convincing 4-1 win away at Monza in midweek.
That triumph means Max Allegri’s men have suffered just one defeat in their last six league games, having also held unbeaten Roma to a 3-3 draw last weekend.
Juventus, by contrast, have hit a sticky patch, having been put to the sword 3-0 by Lazio in their most recent home match before going down 2-0 away to Genoa earlier this week.
Luciano Spalletti’s side have also failed to beat AC Milan at home this season, drawing 1-1, and now face a Napoli team that should provide a similar test.
That could be a tough ask with Juventus carrying a fairly lengthy injury list, which only adds to the appeal of keeping the visitors onside in Turin.
