📈 Arsenal v Man United Form & Tactics
Arsenal registered their seventh straight win in the Champions League during the week, as they took apart Inter and came away 3-1 winners, with a slightly rotated side. The Gunners have definitely been the most complete side in the Premier League so far this season, with their home games highlighting the dominance they have in matches - Arsenal have won nine of their 11 games at the Emirates in the Premier League this season, only dropping points against Man City and Liverpool.
Arsenal have only conceded five goals across these home games, so it will be a challenge for United to break them down, but Carrick does have options that can hurt Arteta’s side. Arsenal have not lost a game in any competition since their 2-1 defeat against Aston Villa back at the start of December, winning nine of their 12 matches since that defeat.
If I were to be critical of Arsenal, I would say that they are still short on goals from open play. They are brilliant from set pieces, and will certainly look to use that avenue here, but I do think the Gunners could do with a few more goals from other avenues.
Their top scorer in the Premier League this season is Trossard, with five goals to his name, which is short for a side expected to battle for the title, though Arteta has built this side perfectly for the current era of the Premier League, which revolves around physicality and set plays.
Carrick organised his side really effectively in their 2-0 win over Man City, though we have seen many ‘new dawns’ at Old Trafford before, only for United to return to type in the games that follow. Nevertheless, I think Carrick will have quite a lot of success in this interim period if he can manage the player power which appears to be rife at United. He keeps things simple, and United fans will appreciate that after seeing strange systems under Ruben Amorim.
In terms of the overall picture for United, they’re still in a great position to qualify for the Champions League - which was the target before the start of the season. They also have the advantage of playing just one game a week from now until the end of the campaign, having exited the FA Cup and EFL Cup already this term.
This should give them a slight fitness advantage on the teams around them, who will still all be contesting at least two games a week.
📔 Arsenal v Man United Formation & Team News
Arsenal have complete dominance in the majority of games they play in under Mikel Arteta, with Guardiola’s former assistant prioritising control over anything else. Arsenal usually take on a 3-2-4-1 shape when in possession, with Zubimendi being key to this set up.
Zubimendi has been one of my favourite players to watch in the Premier League this season, and has arguably been the signing of the summer for the impact he’s had on this Arsenal side.
He’s patient on the ball and can control the tempo, and he also frees up Declan Rice to push on and get more involved in the final third. The role of the fullbacks is also very intriguing in this Arsenal set up - though they are expected to be without Calafiori, who is their best option in this role.
Arsenal’s defensive structure and intensity is the most notable part of their game. I haven’t seen a mid-block more effective than the 4-4-2 Arteta employs when Arsenal are without the ball - and the intensity in this work is very notable. You’ll often see Arsenal swarm back in packs to get into their defensive shape, they are the best defensive side in the league but I’d also say they are the most hard working when without the ball.
Man United set up in a 4-4-2 when out of possession against Man City last weekend, with Carrick very intelligently placing Mbeumo and Fernandes either side of Rodri, and allowing Dorgu and Amad to be his runners in beyond. This structure allowed United constant access to the City backline, and they could have come away with a few more goals if it wasn’t for Donnarumma.
Carrick also reintroduced Kobbie Mainoo to the side and it became instantly apparent that he should have been playing this whole time. Only a personal vendetta by Ruben Amorim kept Mainoo out of the side, and he showed great ability to get out of tight spaces and progress the ball from deep for United - which is something that they always missed under Amorim.
Finally, Bruno Fernandes is still the heart of this United side and showed his quality in that 2-0 win over City. He’s probably the only United player that has maintained a high standard regardless of who is in the dugout, and I think he’ll benefit from being a bit higher up the pitch again, after being dropped deeper by Ruben Amorim.
