Aston Villa suffer awful start
Aston Villa are one of the clubs that everyone has been talking about this summer. For two reasons, their fantastic transfer business and impending participation in European competition for the first time since the 2010/11 season. Many pundits and people in football have been predicting a high finish for Villa, with some even having them above the likes of Newcastle and Spurs. Yes, we’re looking at you, Gary Neville.
The former United right-back might be eating his words come May, as Villa had the worst start of any top-flight side. They were dismantled at St James’ Park, losing 5-1 with Tyrone Mings suffering a long-term injury. The one bright spark for Villa to take away was Moussa Diaby, their new winger looked brilliant on the ball and grabbed a goal on his Premier League debut, he is definitely one to watch.
Aston Villa team news
Aston Villa have been incredibly unlucky with injuries in their squad over the last few weeks. In pre-season, they lost Emi Buendia to an ACL injury that will keep him ruled out for at least six months according to reports.
Now Mings, who suffered a similar injury in Villa’s 5-1 defeat to Newcastle, will likely be out for at least three months. Luckily Villa have recently signed Pau Torres from Villareal who has experience working with Unai Emery.
Jacob Ramsey and Alex Moreno are also ruled out for the game and Leon Bailey is a doubt but could make the bench.
Everton looking for first win
The Toffees survived relegation by the skin of their teeth last season, it came down to the final matchday but they managed to stay up. They have kept Sean Dyche at the helm and added a few reinforcements to the side, including Jack Harrison, Arnaut Danjuma and Ashley Young.
It will be a tough task to get a victory at Villa Park, but if any manager can go to a tough away game and get something as the underdog, it’s the man from Kettering, big Sean Dyche.
Everton team news
The Toffees will be without Dwight McNeil, Jack Harrison and Dele Alli for this gameweek. Many Evertonians will be looking forward to Harrison’s return from injury as he’s yet to make his Everton debut.
Aston Villa v Everton Cheat Sheet
Here is our Cheat Sheet, this holds all of the key stats relating directly to the Paddy Power bet builder markets. Have a read through and you’ll be able to make some well-informed bet builder predictions for yourself.
Based on what we can see and what we already know about the two sides, it could be a dominant display from the Villans. They’ll hold the ball for large portions of the game whilst the Toffees will rely heavily on counter-attacks and set-pieces. Villa will need to be sharp and take the limited opportunities they’ll get, as Fulham did last week. Fulham had just two shots on target and managed to score. Villa will need to harness that same ruthlessness in front of goal if they’re to sweep Everton aside.
We expect to see tackles flying in from both sets of players, particularly those in Everton blue. With Joe Garner, Amadou Onana and Idrissa Gueye all likely to start it will be a surprise if we don’t see at least a few yellow cards in the match.

⚽ Moussa Diaby to score or assist
📈
Odds: 1.91
New signing Moussa Diaby started his Villa career with a bang, scoring a quick equaliser after Sandro Tonali put Newcastle in front last weekend.
His team-mates may not have been able to keep the game close, but Diaby and Ollie Watkins looked threatening throughout, and should get more service against the Toffees.
Diaby’s 2.84 shots per 90 ranks in the top 20% of all attacking midfielders and wingers across Europe’s top five leagues. He scores at a rate of 0.37 goals per game, and assists once every four games, both of which see him ranking highly in his position across Europe’s big five leagues. This is all the more impressive when you consider that he has rarely been playing for a truly top side, having spent last year at a rebuilding Bayer Leverkusen team in Germany.
Villa should win today, and Diaby is likely to be crucial if they do.

🛑 Andre Onana to commit 1+ fouls
📈
Odds: 1.13
Amadou Onana has already committed three fouls in just one game this season, and few would bet against him adding at least another foul to that total today.
Onana started 29 Premier League games for the Toffees last season, and committed at least one foul in 24 of those games. Only twice in the five games where he did not commit a foul did Onana last the full 90 minutes.
Last season’s 2-0 and 2-1 defeats at the hands of Villa suggest this game will stay close throughout, which should mean Onana remains on the pitch for most, if not all of the 90 minutes. History suggests when Onana starts, he usually fouls, so this looks a near certainty, especially facing Boubacar Kamara and Diaby who are both adept at drawing fouls.

🛑 Idrissa Gueye to commit 1+ fouls
📈
Odds: 1.13
Idrissa Gueye ranks just slightly behind midfield partner Onana in terms of fouls, committing 1.50 per 90, compared to his Belgian counterparts’ 1.59. Similarly to Onana, Gueye committed a foul in 22 of his 30 Premier League appearances in which he played at least 60 minutes last season.
The Senegalese midfielder is combative and aggressive in the tackle, so despite his high success rate, (winning 1.99 tackles per game), Gueye can pick up fouls simply by being too strong in the tackle as opposed to mis-timing it.
Gueye only played once against Villa last season, but he did commit three fouls in that game, whilst drawing four fouls himself. With John McGinn and Douglas Luiz able to match his own aggression, we should expect similar numbers again here.

⚽ Moussa Diaby to score or assist
📈
Odds: 1.91
Diaby is a repeat selection for our longer-priced bet builder after his lively display in the North East. It is important not to overreact on one showing but this selection also comes down to the body of work the Frenchman put together as one of the star wide players in the Bundesliga.
Diaby is ready to take on talismanic status at Villa Park and could well have taken a move to a club competing in the Champions League instead this summer. His unpredictable dribbling and eye for a pass should see him chip in against Everton’s resistance.

🟨 Andre Onana to be shown a card
📈
Odds: 2.64
The fouls stats above prove that Onana is likely to be involved in a series of running battles, but last season’s performances against the top seven suggest that a card may also be likely here.
Of the nine games against last season’s top seven where Onana played over 60 minutes, he was booked in six, including last season’s reverse fixture at Goodison Park.
The Belgian will be involved with McGinn, Kamara and Luiz, all of whom feature in the top five players for drawing fouls at Villa, so it would be little surprise to see Onana accumulate one too many small fouls and pick himself up a booking.
Referee Anthony Taylor is also way above his career average for cards this season, averaging 4.20 bookings per game, compared to his usual rate of 3.55, something which could benefit the card pick here.

🛑 Idrissa Gueye to commit 2+ fouls
📈
Odds: 1.73
As stated above, Gueye is extremely likely to be heavily involved in both committing and drawing fouls here, and this is a nice price for a player who was either fouled or made a foul seven times in one game against this opponent last season.
Whilst Onana’s bookings tend to come against the league’s better sides, Gueye’s are much more unpredictable, yet his foul numbers stay consistent, hence why we are backing him to commit two or more fouls here, rather than be carded.
