Villa Park has proved to be a fortress this season. Villa have only lost twice at home in the Premier League (from 13 matches), and have scored an impressive average of 2.69 goals per game.
Last weekend, Villa managed an 89th-minute winner against Luton Town, with Lucas Digne finding the back of the net with a header from a fantastic ball in by Moussa Diaby. They have now won four of their last five matches in the Premier League and will be a tough opponent for Spurs on Sunday.
Spurs have also been performing well this season, currently sitting in fifth place and just five points behind Villa (with a game in hand). They came back from 1-0 down at the weekend to beat Crystal Palace 3-1, with Heung-min Son scoring the final goal; his first since returning from international duties.
Both sides are expected to be without plenty of their regular starters for this clash, with Villa missing Diego Carlos, Jacob Ramsey, and Boubacar Kamara – all of which played against Spurs in their last match. Spurs are without Pedro Porro, who started against Villa in their last game, and also face doubt over Richarlison’s knee injury.
With these two being so close together in the table, this game promises to be a good one. This article aims to break down the key stats behind this match, picking out the best bets so you don’t have to. If you like any of the selections, why not add them into your Aston Villa v Tottenham bet builder?

🏆 Match stats: The floodgates likely to open
Both Aston Villa and Tottenham have seen a high number of goals both for and against this season, and look set to continue this form. Villa have scored an average of 2.19 goals per game this season (2.69 at Villa Park), whilst still conceding an average of 1.37 (1.15 at home). All of their last five games have seen Over 2.5 goals land, with three of them seeing five or more goals.
Spurs have seen similar averages (2.12 goals for and 1.50 goals against) so far in their Premier League campaign. Both these stats increase when isolating just their away fixtures, rising to 2.17 and 1.67 respectively. Similar to Villa, Spurs have seen Over 2.5 goals in all of their last five Premier League outings.
Villa and Spurs have seen the both teams score plenty of times this season. Eight of Villa’s last ten fixtures saw them score and concede at least one goal, nine for Spurs. Finally, their last meeting also ended with both teams finding the back of the net. It looks highly likely that those trends will continue on Sunday.
Predictions:
⚽ Both teams to score @ 1.29
⚽ Over 2.5 goals @ 1.30
⚽ Over 3.5 goals @ 1.85
🥅 Goals Stats: Both teams enjoy being in the lead early on
We’ve seen the goalscoring ability of both sides, and chosen some strong selections above. However, there is even more value to be found in backing first half goals…
All of Villa’s last seven games, over all competitions, saw at least one goal scored in the first half of the match. Five of those seven saw two or more first half goals. If the Premier League was to be ranked by first half goals, Villa would sit in second place with 29, just one behind Arsenal. Overall, their games have seen an average of 1.56 first half goals.
Spurs have scored 22 first half goals so far this Premier League campaign, ranking them sixth in the league. They have also conceded 17, with a similar overall average to Villa (1.50). Clearly both teams enjoy attacking the game from the outset, especially Villa who would rank first in the league if all games ended at half time (13W 8D 6L). For reference this is stronger than the actual league leaders’ (Liverpool) first half record (9W 14D 4L).
Predictions:
⚽ Over 1.5 first half goals @ 2.0
🎯 Shooting Stats: Ollie Watkins set for a record season
Ollie Watkins has been on fire for Villa this season, proving himself to be one of the best attackers in the league. He has scored 21 goals across all competitions this season (16 in the Premier League), and is poised to score his most goals in one season with his current record standing at 26 goals.
Unsurprisingly, Watkins ranks first out of any regular starting Villa player in shots and shots on target per match, averaging 3.21 and 1.47 respectively. In all of his last five Premier League games, he has taken at least one shot on target, managing two or more shots on target in four of those matches.
Watkins has a strong record against Spurs too, having scored and taken three shots in his last outing against them. Adding him into your Aston Villa v Tottenham bet builder would be a great way to secure some solid value.
Predictions:
⚽ Ollie Watkins to have 1+ shots on target @ 1.25
⚽ Ollie Watkins to have 2+ shots on target @ 2.30
⚽ Ollie Watkins to score anytime @ 2.20
🛑 Fouls stats: Two Villans who love a challenge
John McGinn is often described as a walking yellow card, and is certainly living up to that name this season. McGinn has picked up seven bookings from 27 matches in the Premier League, the joint highest of any Villa player. He has also seen a high average of 1.14 fouls per league match, committing three last weekend against Luton.
Another Villa midfielder who has seen seven bookings so far this campaign is Douglas Luiz. The Brazilian international has been averaging 1.20 fouls per game, seeing yellow last time out. Further, both McGinn and Luiz showed their dark arts in their last clash with Spurs; McGinn picked up a booking, and Luiz committed three fouls.
Predictions:
⚽ Douglas Luiz to be shown a card @ 3.0
⚽ John McGinn to be shown a card @ 3.50
