The EFL Trophy is a much maligned competition, especially after the recent inclusion of higher-division U21 teams, but it provides League One and Two clubs with an extra chance at Wembley glory outside of the play-offs. 

We can expect over 60,000 fans inside the national stadium on Sunday afternoon as Birmingham take on Peterborough. It really shows the strength of the English football pyramid.

As we have two teams from the same division facing each other in the final, we already have two league games worth of evidence to take a look at, the most recent of which took place earlier this week.

Birmingham City won both league games, perhaps unsurprisingly given they have run away with the League One title, but not without peril in both games, with both teams scoring in each fixture, finishing with 3-2 and 2-1 scorelines.

Peterborough are the division's entertainers, their fixtures containing the most goals, at an average of 3.3 goals per game. Both teams have scored in 27 of 41, the joint-highest ratio in League One.

We think Blues will be too strong on the day, but Posh should be able to cause them problems.

⚪ Kwame Poku

It’s no surprise that an upturn in form for Darren Ferguson’s side coincided with the return to fitness of Kwame Poku, one of the most exciting attacking players in League One, having not been able to start a league game between the end of November and mid March.

Despite his limited game-time, he has 12 goals and eight assists to his name in League One, so 20 goal contributions in 23 starts, the latest of which came when scoring against Birmingham in midweek.

Poku usually operates off the right-hand side, where he can cut inside off the wing on his left foot.

💻 Birmingham v Peterborough Form and Tactics

This is a game between the two sides with the most accurate passing in League One, so it should be one for the purists. There is not much to choose between the two sides in terms of attacking numbers, both actual and underlying, but the big difference between the two sides is in keeping the ball out of their own net. Posh have conceded 2.5 times as many goals as Birmingham.

Birmingham are in magnificent form, having taken 65 points from the last 78 available. It is to be expected given the resources available to them, but they have gone about it with business-like efficiency. Jay Stansfield and Alfie May may be the most recognisable names, but it’s the likes of goalkeeper Ryan Allsop and central defender Christoph Klarer who have provided the solid base from which to build.

It’s been a below par season for Peterborough, who were expected to be top half at the very least. They are regular play-off/promotion challengers at League One level, but seem to have gone a bit too youth-heavy with their squad this year and have not been able to compete at the top end. Until results picked up over the last month or so, they were very much part of the relegation picture.
