Blackpool to Win

Steve Bruce got a handle on this job as the season progressed in 2024/25. The Seasiders had only three defeats in 24 league matches between December and mid-April, but just as the play-offs seemed a slight possibility again there was a wobble. Ultimately, too many draws, especially at home, cost them a top six berth.

However, recruitment has been early and positive this summer. They have lost a weapon in Rob Apter, but they have secured the services of Niall Ennis and solidified defensively with Fraser Horsfall and Michael Ihiekwe.

I like them for a potential play-off challenge this season, and an unbeaten pre-season, as much as it means very little, cannot hurt the preparations for this opening match.

Over 1.5 Goals

Adding this into the selections eliminates the potential for a Blackpool 1-0 win, which is very much by design because in the entirety of the 2024/25 season there was no such scoreline, home or away, in any competition.

Every single Blackpool win was achieved by them scoring two or more goals. Whilst Horsfall and Ihiekwe have clearly been added with the idea of potentially achieving more clean sheets and the potential for 1-0 wins, this is a trend that is worth capitalising on with a little bit of added juice.

Ashley Fletcher to Score Anytime

Fletcher seems to have finally found a home that his undoubted talents can flourish in. Since being transferred to West Ham at an early age, Fletcher has been talked up and trusted to deliver the goods at multiple clubs, but last season was his first finishing as outright team top scorer and his first in double figures of goals since scoring 11 for Middlesbrough in 2019/20.

He remains at Blackpool for a second season, again the first time that he has remained with the same club over consecutive seasons since Middlesbrough in 2020/21, and this familiarity and preparation should stand him in good stead to begin the season with a bang.

🟠 Blackpool Aiming to Continue Creative Attacking Ways

Blackpool were a force in attack last season, with the joint second highest number of goals behind Birmingham City, level with Leyton Orient.

They did slightly overperform their expected goals (xG) data over that time, scoring 72 goals from an expected 65, but this is within the realms of realistic variation and not an overperformance to be concerned about.

That xG value stood the Seasiders in good company, as the third best in the league; it was clearly the defensive side of the game that prevented Blackpool from challenging more seriously for promotion.

Stevenage Aiming for Third-Tier History

Stevenage are making a good fist of establishing themselves as a third-tier club. For much of their history, this would’ve seemed a massive overreach of their size, but canny recruitment, a suitable game style, and good coaching have stabilised them in League One, and this will be their third consecutive campaign at this level.

If they are able to survive this season, it would be a record for the longest third-tier stay in the club’s history.

📊 Blackpool v Stevenage H2H

Blackpool have won two of the last four meetings, which have occurred in the last two League One seasons. The teams were two divisions apart as recently as 2022/23 as Blackpool competed in the Championship whilst Stevenage were a League Two club.

There has been no real pattern to establish in how the four recent meetings have panned out. Blackpool’s wins have been quite heavy, 3-0 at home in 2023 and 3-1 away last time out in April this year, but there have also been two tight encounters in between, a 0-0 and a 1-0 Stevenage win.

One thing to note is that the 3-1 win last time was inspired by a Rob Apter hat-trick, Apter has since moved into the Championship with Charlton, so he is not available to be the scourge of Stevenage on this occasion.
