Burnley v West Brom Cheat Sheet
Burnley v West Brom
Friday night sees a clash of the two form teams in the Championship as West Brom travel to Turf Moor to face league leaders Burnley. The hosts are surely going to return to the Premier League at the first time of asking as they sit five points clear of Sheffield United in second and an enormous 16 points clear of Watford in third. Last time out they scored a late winner against Coventry to win 1-0 to continue their run of seven consecutive Championship wins. Despite a slow start that saw Steve Bruce sacked, West Brom have seen a resurgence under new boss Carlos Corberan and currently sit in the playoffs. The Baggies arrive here after a 4-0 domination over Chesterfield in the FA Cup and last time out in the Championship, they came from two goals down to win at Luton.
The home side are flying under Vincent Kompany, who is dominating in his first season as a manager in England. Following a slow start where they won just one of their first five games, Sheffield United and Manchester United (in the EFL Cup) are the only two teams to beat them since the 12th of August. At home in the league, they are yet to lose and have won ten of their fourteen games and have picked up 34 points – seven more than any other team in the division. They are by far the highest scorers in the league with 53 goals and have conceded just one more than the best defence in the league (Sheffield United), having conceded just 25 goals to this point. Even more impressively, the goals have been spread around the team. Jay Rodriguez (9), Nathan Tella (8), Manuel Benson (7), Josh Brownhill (5) and Anass Zaroury (5) have all contributed with number of goals from all over the pitch.
From their last starting eleven, every outfield player has contributed to a goal or an assist already this season and in all, 17 different players have had a direct involvement in a goal. Vincent Kompany has completely overhauled the stereotypes associated with Burnley and Sean Dyche and their style of play and they have completed 466.9 passes per game in the division and average 63.1% of the ball – second in both of those metrics only to Swansea. They do however have injuries. Centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis has a foot injury which will rule him out for the next two months and will also be without right back Vitinho here. Charlie Taylor and Tyler Roberts should be the two that come in in their place.
West Brom have one of the most talented squads in the division but looked like potential relegation candidates after just one win in their first 13 which saw Steve Bruce replaced. Former manager Steve Bruce was then sacked and replaced later in the month by Carlos Corberan, who was impressive in leading Huddersfield to the play-off final last season. At the time the Spaniard took over, they were rock bottom of the table after 17 games. His first game was a 2-0 loss at home to Sheffield United, but since then he has won nine of his ten games conceding just four goals in that time. Across each Championship team’s last ten games, Burnley and West Brom have picked up the most points with 27. Given that they are 13 points behind Sheffield United following their slow start, automatic promotion may be off the table, but Corberan will personally be hoping to go one better than last year with Huddersfield. He will have been frustrated with the extra game in midweek as Chesterfield took them to an FA Cup replay, but they got the job done with a very comfortable 4-0 win to continue building momentum whilst being able to rest players. The only dampener on the evening was an injury to Matty Phillips which has meant that he is a doubt for this one. They will also be without Kyle Bartley and Karlan Grant, whilst Brandon Thomas-Asante is suspended for this one.
Burnley are flying and are scoring plenty of goals, averaging 2.14 goals scored per game at home and no team has shut them out at Turf Moor this season. The data suggests that this is fair as they have had at least one expected goal for in all but two of their home games this season – having 0.75xGF in the other two. They have kept a clean sheet in 43% of their home games and in three of their last four but have not been tested enough there. Of those clean sheets, Blackburn managed just 0.04 xG and Birmingham just 0.12.
Whilst this is a testament to the Burnley defence, West Brom and Carlos Corberan will not allow them to have it all their own way and will try and attack Vincent Kompany’s side. The Clarets were a little fortunate not to concede here last week as they conceded 0.85 expected goals to the Sky Blues and conceded 2.34 in their two games prior to that against Swansea and Stoke – two sides that are inferior to West Brom right now.
West Brom are scoring more goals now and have managed to score in all but one of their away games under Corberan so far. Their last three games on the road in all competitions have seen them score eight goals, including three in each of their last two. The data shows that this is not an anomaly. They have had at least one expected goal for in eight of the 11 league games Corberan has taken charge of, including at least 1.70 xGF in each of their last four Championship fixtures.
Defensively, Corberan has made them rock solid and they do not concede too many. However, their last game against Luton saw them concede two inside ten minutes and before that they conceded three at non-league Chesterfield. They have improved significantly at the back, but Burnley will be full of confidence and will be looking to get at West Brom early. The reverse fixture saw a very late Brandon Thomas-Asante equaliser meaning that this selection landed.
Burnley have been scoring plenty in recent games and have piled pressure on their opponents. Since the break they have had 78 shots in eight games, 32 of which have been on target. They have played three home games and have had at least four in each, having five last time out here against Coventry. They have scored the most goals this season and average 4.6 shots on target per game. They are behind only Sheffield United in terms of big chances created with their 41 up to this point.
West Brom won’t make it easy for their opponents though. They’ll be looking to attack but have looked more exposed at the back in recent weeks than they did at the start of Corberan’s tenure. They have played five away games since the start of December and have conceded 58 shots, 24 of which on target. This selection has landed in each of their last two on the road (at Luton and Chesterfield) and in three of their last five. Burnley will be a sterner test for the Baggies and they should manage to create chances. Burnley had ten shots, three of which were on target, in the first game between these two this season.
Jed Wallace is West Brom’s second top scorer this season with four goals, only behind Brandon Thomas-Asante’s five. Of every player to play more than 400 minutes this season, he has taken the second most shots per 90, averaging 2.20 per game. The winger has had 55 shots, with 23 of those on target and since the break he has had 14 shots in seven league starts. This selection has landed in 18 of his 27 league starts this season and had three shots at Luton last time out. The Englishman will be playing as a right winger here. Since the break, Burnley have faced four teams that have played with wingers, and they have conceded at least one shot to three of those four teams’ right wingers. At the Hawthorns against Burnley this season, Wallace had five shots with three of those hitting the target.
