He loves championing the young talent that Ligue 1 produces on a seemingly perpetual basis as well as the chaos of the unique world of SPFL football. He is currently based in central Scotland and can be found weekly taking in games and rating pies at windswept venues across the country.

Canada and Qatar both drew their opening World Cup games – securing a first World Cup point for both sides. While the co-hosts are hot favourites to come away with a win here, there remains strong value on them racking up a high corner count while Celtic’s Alistair Johnston could be in for a lively evening at both ends of the park.

📈 Canada Recent Form

Canada impressed in their opening round draw with Bosnia. They limited Bosnia to 0.02 xG from open play, conceding from a corner in the first half, and eventually knocked the door down with Cyle Larin rescuing a point with a 78th-minute deflected strike.

A win over Qatar would likely be enough to seal a place in the round of 32, which could well be enough for this to be deemed a successful tournament already.

Alphonso Davies did not feature at all against Bosnia, and he should add some quality to their side with and without the ball if he can come off the bench, which he is reported to have a chance of doing, against the Qataris.

📈 Qatar Recent Form

Qatar got their first point on the board at a World Cup, by snatching a late draw against Switzerland (1-1).

They struggled to lay a glove on the Swiss, who will rue some poor finishing having posted 3.20 xG, but hung in there, with goalkeeper Mahmud Abanada making five saves, and scored at the back post in the 94th minute.

It wasn't a recipe for success, Canada can punish them if afforded a similar amount of goalscoring opportunity, but it will do wonders for belief after they were outclassed in all facets in the 2022 tournament.
