Celtic will begin their defence of the Scottish League Cup trophy with a home game against Falkirk on Friday night.

Unsurprisingly, Celtic are short-priced 1.09 favourites with a Falkirk triumph trading at a towering 12.0, while the 90-minute draw is also considered improbable at 6.4.

Over 2.5 Celtic Goals @ 1.57

As a Falkirk supporter, I’m worried about the potential for this cup tie getting ugly for us on Friday night. The Bairns were soundly beaten 3-1 by Livingston last weekend, and it could have been worse given that the Lions missed a penalty. Falkirk also looked shaky at the back during their opening league game of the season when drawing 2-2 with Dundee United.

Celtic will obviously represent a serious step up in class, and I would be surprised if Brendan Rodgers’ side don’t score a minimum of three goals on Friday night. The Hoops played host to Falkirk at the quarter-final stage of this competition last season, with Rodgers’ team running out 5-2 winners.

Celtic to Win to Nil @ 1.79

I’m also more than happy to propose a play on Celtic to Win to Nil on Friday night. Brendan Rodgers’ side have silenced both St Mirren and Aberdeen across the opening two weeks of the Scottish Premiership season, so they should be able to stand firm against Falkirk.

While Celtic survived a scare against Falkirk in last season’s Scottish League Cup, I suspect Rodgers will have learned his lesson from that and won’t take the Bairns so lightly this time around.

What’s more, John McGlynn's men lacked quality in the final third against Livingston last time out, so it’s hard to envisage them making their mark here against a higher calibre of opposition. On top of that, Falkirk’s attacking threat will be diminished by the injury sustained to key forward Ethan Ross last weekend.

🟢 Hoops Have Hit the Ground Running

Celtic are one of only two teams to have won each of their opening two Scottish Premiership matches of the season. After kicking off their top-flight campaign with an unconvincing 1-0 win over St Mirren, the Hoops were much-improved when claiming a 2-0 success away at Aberdeen on Sunday.

Brendan Rodgers’ side dominated possession (72%) and won the xG battle 1.24 to 0.48, restricting the Dons to just two on-target efforts.

Celtic have racked up a combined total of 18 corners across their opening two Scottish Premiership games of the season, including 12 in their previous home match with St Mirren.

Bairns Well Beaten

As mentioned, Falkirk found themselves on the wrong end of a 3-1 defeat at Livingston on Saturday. Going forward, John McGlynn’s men were lacking the creativity and ability required to find a way through a typically well-structured Livingston side, with the goal Falkirk did score coming from a set piece. At the other end of the park, the Bairns gave up an xG of 1.59, with Livingston hitting the target with five of their nine attempts on goal.

Defensive errors have been a common theme for Falkirk during the early weeks of the season, with attempting to play out from the back being a factor.

📊 Celtic v Falkirk H2H

As already alluded to, Celtic claimed a 5-2 win over Falkirk at this venue at the quarter-final stage of last season’s Scottish League Cup. That was the first meeting between the two clubs since contesting a Scottish Cup tie back in 2021, with Celtic running out 3-0 winners on that occasion.
