4/1 Leeds United v Southampton Bet Builder Tip
🎯 Crysencio Summerville to have 1+ shots on target
The Championship Player of the Year will surely be ready to step up and provide his final big performance of the season. He was the only Leeds player to hit a shot on target in both legs of the semi-final, and he has been the sharpest in front of goal all season, ending the regular season as Leeds’ top scorer.
He averages 1.18 shots on target per match, so even his average performance will be enough for this leg to collect, but there is very little chance that Summerville will be taken out of the action here so he will have the maximum amount of time on the big pitch to find the space to test Alex McCarthy.
🩹 Kyle Walker-Peters to be fouled 2+ times
This happened in both legs of the semi-finals and has also happened on a very regular basis throughout the regular season.
Walker-Peters was fouled 83 times in the regular season, so 87 times in 45 matches now, almost exactly twice per 90 minutes. In a match such as this, with the pressure and the denial of chances being paramount, Leeds will be keen to stop him by any means necessary.
Junior Firpo is a regular fouler, and Crysencio Summerville is too, but Summerville might be more interested in going forward rather than providing cover for the full back.
🛑 Will Smallbone to commit 1+ fouls
Smallbone has been underestimated for a foul here. He’s in a midfield in which the other central midfielders are all much shorter than him for a foul, it would be a surprise if Smallbone didn’t get involved in this.
There is also the spectacle of Georginio Rutter drifting into deep midfield locations to pick up the ball. In this scenario it is usually the responsibility of the central midfielders to pick up and track the Leeds attacker, the most fouled player in the Championship this season.
9/1 Leeds United v Southampton Longshot
🩹 Georginio Rutter to be fouled 3+ times
As mentioned, Rutter is the most fouled player in the Championship. He somehow avoided being fouled in the second leg of the semi-final, but there is no way that Southampton are going to allow Rutter to pick the ball up and cause a threat to their backline unopposed.
There are enough wily operators in the Southampton midfield with a record of committing fouls, such as Flynn Downes, who seemed to be detailed to do a job on Rutter in the last match of the season, who will know that they need to stop the young Frenchman.
Rutter was fouled three times in the last match against Southampton, and four times in September. He also went five matches in a row to the end of the season in picking up three fouls a match.
🎯 Will Smallbone to have 1+ shots on target
The Southampton schemer looks to be a key weapon for Russell Martin against Leeds.
He ghosted into the area in the first meeting to score, and had two shots on target a few weeks ago.
With Downes potentially on Rutter-marking duty, it could be Smallbone’s role to support the attack and use his underrated finishing to try and get on the scoresheet, as he did last time out. At a good odds-against price, this is a shrewd addition.
🛑 Ilia Gruev to commit 2+ fouls
Another player not worried about totting up the fouls is Leeds’ athletic midfielder, Ilia Gruev. It is clear what Daniel Farke sees in the Bulgarian international, he works really hard, has a good left foot in possession, and from a dead ball as we saw in the play-off semi-final, and he has no problem in breaking up opposition attacks.
His recent fouls record reads 2, 4, 3, 3 and he will be tasked with being combative against Southampton’s usual possession style to try and disrupt their build-up as often as possible.
