Chelsea v West Ham
📅
Kick Off: Monday 3rd February at 20:00
🏆
Competition: Premier League
Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter returns to Stamford Bridge in the away dugout with 2 wins, 1 draw and 1 win from his first 4 games in charge of the Hammers. West Ham fans will be encouraged by their second-half performance at Villa Park last time out with Potter beginning to embed his ideas into the East London side.
Current Chelsea manager Enzo Maresca will be mildly concerned with Chelsea’s recent form. The Blues were the architects of their own downfall in their 3-1 loss to Manchester City, failing to take advantage of a tentative start by the reigning champions and gifting Manchester City a route to victory after another mistake by goalkeeper Robert Sanchez. They comfortably swept aside West Ham by a 3-0 scoreline in the initial meeting between the sides but it will be a different challenge here against a new manager and Chelsea in a difficult moment in their season.
⭐ Chelsea v West Ham Best Bet
With Jarod Bowen and Fullkrug still potentially injured, West Ham have had to play without a recognised striker in recent weeks. Evan Ferguson is being monitored as a possible arrival before the January transfer window closes but until a replacement is found, Potter seems to prefer Kudus playing as the number 9 in a move that should aid his already promising shot on target record.
Kudus has had 15 shots on target across his 18 Premier League appearances this season (0.91 per 90), resulting in 3 goals for the 24-year-old. Of the players fit and available for West Ham for this game, only Danny Ings is averaging more shots on target per 90 than Mohammed Kudus in the Premier League this season.
Chelsea are far from defensively secure, Enzo Maresca’s side have failed to keep a clean sheet in any of their last 5 Premier League matches and are averaging 4.39 shots on target conceded per 90 in the top flight this season. West Ham managed 7 shots on target in a defeat to Chelsea earlier in the season, Kudus had 2 of these and can disturb an unsettled Chelsea backline again here.
🟢 Chelsea v West Ham #WhatOddsPaddy Tip
Chelsea are usually quite dominant in their performances at Stamford Bridge, this isn’t always reflected by the result but in quite a few underlying metrics including shots on target, corners and fouls drawn.
Chelsea are averaging 6.1 shots on target per game in the Premier League, only Liverpool are having more attempts on goal than Enzo Maresca’s side . West Ham are averaging 4.1 shots on target per game with only the three promoted sides and Everton averaging fewer attempts on goal than Graham Potter’s side, he’ll be eager to improve that attacking record but it won’t be easy here.
Chelsea have racked up 137 corners across their 23 Premier League games this campaign (5.95 per 90). Chelsea’s opponents at Stamford Bridge are only averaging 3.45 corners per game whilst West Ham are averaging 4.09 corners per game in their away games in the Premier League.
These teams are quite close in the fouls committed per 90 numbers (11.8-11.7) but West Ham are averaging 47.2% possession to Chelsea’s 57.9% and committed 17 fouls in the initial encounter to Chelsea’s 9.
👕 Chelsea v West Ham Predicted XI
🔍 Chelsea v West Ham Players to Watch
🔵 Cole Palmer
Cole Palmer has registered 20 goal contributions across his 23 Premier League appearances this season (14 goals, 6 assists) – leading Chelsea ranks in both metrics. He’s Chelsea’s most important attacking player and is involved in the majority of their promising moves in the final third. Palmer scored in Chelsea’s 3-0 win over West Ham earlier in the season and can continue his excellent season here with another goal contribution against a West Ham side that has conceded 18 goals across their 11 away games in the Premier League this season.
🔵 Moises Caicedo
Caicedo has been a crucial and consistent component in Chelsea’s midfield this season, the 23-year-old has won 32 fouls across his 23 Premier League appearances this season (1.41 per 90). Caicedo has won 2+ fouls in 4 out of his last 5 Premier League appearances and was fouled twice from 16 duels in the initial meeting between the sides at the London Stadium earlier this season. Caicedo will be faced up by Lucas Paqueta who is averaging 1.78 fouls committed per 90 across his 11 Premier League appearances this campaign.

💻 Chelsea v West Ham Form and Tactics
Enzo Maresca’s Chelsea are facing a tough period of the season, the West London side have been inconsistent since the turn of the year and performing at home has been a problem all season. Chelsea have only won 5 of their 11 games at home in the Premier League this season, scoring 5 fewer goals compared to their 12 games on the road this campaign. They haven’t been losing many games (2) but failure to kill off teams has resulted in cheap dropped points with the Blues still missing a reliable vocal point up front that can make the difference in tight games.
Recently, Maresca has tinkered with his setup in the face of inconsistent results. Against Manchester City, fullbacks Cucurella and Reece James were a lot more traditional in their setup with neither inverting or bombing on too far down their respective sides. This could be Maresca accommodating for the attacking talent Manchester City have but it’s worth noting that one of these fullbacks usually does invert or push up into the attacking half space. Interestingly, Reece James hasn’t really been tasked with either of these roles yet as Maresca attempts to manage his fitness.
Graham Potter is starting to get his ideas across to his West Ham side, the Hammers put in one of their best halves of football this season in their 1-1 draw with Aston Villa last time out. The East London side were positive and showed early signs of things we saw during Potter’s time at Brighton including a new shape for West Ham lining up in a 3-4-2-1 structure with plenty of rotations in the final third. In the early stages of Potter’s reign, it’s clear that he’s trying to make West Ham harder to beat with a compact shape and physical players packed into the middle of the park. This is a smart move as West Ham were far too open and easy to get at under Julien Lopetegui evidenced by the fact they’ve conceded 44 goals this season (1.91 per game). This approach could really frustrate Chelsea, their young side struggle to deal with mid-low blocks and often run out of ideas.
