The narrow victory over Serbia in the opening round of group games was Southgate’s fourth consecutive opening win at a major tournament, following victories over Iran (2022), Croatia (2021), and Tunisia (2018).
The 2018 win was followed by a facile victory over a hapless Panama, but the more recent campaigns have seen second match 0-0 draws against Scotland and the USA. The way that England seem to plot through tournaments is to be ultra-cautious at this stage to ensure progression. However, surely, with a much easier route awaiting the group winners, there will be the temptation to secure that first place in the group and give their important players an invaluable mid-tournament break.
The Danes will, of course, be keen to leapfrog England into that leading position and a win here will do that for them. It will also secure their qualification for the knockout stages, however, even a draw wouldn’t be a bad result for Denmark, though it would put pressure on them to then beat Serbia in their final group game.
There’s a big evening ahead for both nations then as the competition hots up.
Denmark v England Best Bets
➡️ Jude Bellingham to be fouled 2+ times @ 1.83 with Paddy Power
➡️ Christian Eriksen to have 2+ shots @ 2.40 with Paddy Power
As mentioned in the introduction, traditionally England have taken quite a cautious view of the second group game when they have won the opener.
It would be a surprise if this match was played with a sense of abandoned and concerted attacking play, England will work hard to ensure that they are not caught out on the counter-attack and it would be unusual to expect many clear-cut chances at either end, this is typical of England’s approach in major international tournaments.
This theory makes it difficult to side with England at odds-on in the match market, but also it is impossible to side with goals as well. This is a traditionally fairly low-scoring matchup, coupled with the likely tactical approach, which gives little inspiration for a goals bet.
Therefore the best bets for the match come in the form of the player props market. Jude Bellingham has really become a clearly marked man for international managers, Kasper Hjulmand has a group of defensive midfielders and aggressive central defenders that are likely to want to shut down Bellingham down on the ball quickly. Bellingham’s price to be fouled twice or more looks a really strong bet at 1.83, especially when one considers that he has now been fouled 17 times in his last four internationals.
Christian Eriksen is also being underpriced for shots at the moment. The Man Utd midfielder is on free-kicks, and he is playing very high because of the cover given by Morten Hjulmand and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg. His shots per international read five against Slovenia, five against Sweden, and three against Switzerland. Eriksen can be backed at 2.4 for two shots in this match.

⚔️ Denmark v England Head-to-Head
Denmark and England have met frequently in the recent past, with both teams managing success against the other.
England won the last meeting, which was the semi-final in the last Euros in 2021, but only after a relatively controversial penalty was given for Raheem Sterling in extra time. Quite a number of players on both sides will line up against each other again in this match, around six for England and possibly five for Denmark, so that could be a slight psychological advantage for England.
Prior to that, in 2020, the nations had played home and away fixtures in the Nations League, where Denmark edged the overall score 1-0, following two fairly tepid and uninspiring matches.
This will be the third meeting between the pair at a major tournament finals. They drew 0-0 in the 1992 European Championship, a tournament that, famously, Denmark would go on to win, and then England put in one of their better performances, beating Denmark 3-0 in the round of 16 in the 2002 World Cup.
📊 Denmark Form and Stats
The Danes came into the Championship having had a little friendly bounce, winning matches against Sweden and Norway 2-1 and 3-1 respectively.
This was definitely required though as much of the Danish public had lost some faith in Kasper Hjulmand following some sub-par performances at the end of qualification and in the March friendlies.
In that time they won narrowly against San Marino and the Faroe Islands, teams that Denmark would usually expect to beat convincingly. They also lost to Northern Ireland, albeit having already qualified for Euro 2024, and drew 0-0 with Switzerland at home in March.
The 1-1 draw against Slovenia typified, for many, the flaws in the current Danish setup. There was a generally competent level of performance, and going 1-0 up through excellent build-up play and a cool Eriksen finish showed the level that Denmark are capable of.
However, the belief is that Denmark took their foot off the pedal too much and let a limited Slovenian team gain a foothold in the match and that eventually cost Denmark a valuable win and has put them in an awkward position in the group.
📊 England Form and Stats
England’s form has been unspectacular both in the build-up to the tournament and also against Serbia in the opening match.
Qualification was sealed early so the last two qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia were very low-key. The Wembley friendlies in March saw mediocre performances in a 0-1 defeat to Brazil, and a last-gasp 2-2 draw with Belgium. These matches were significant only for the amount of authority that Jude Bellingham was able to cast on proceedings, a theme that continued against Serbia in the opening Euro 2024 game.
The warm-up friendlies again lacked much drive and enthusiasm with a flattering 3-0 win over Bosnia & Herzegovina and a 0-1 defeat to Iceland.
Though England managed a win over Serbia, there are concerns to be addressed as regards to chance creation and goalscoring prowess, despite the undoubted ability in the forward players that England have at their disposal.
England created only 0.52 xG in the opener against Serbia, with just two shots inside the box. Combining this with what was seen in the pre-tournament friendlies gives the impression that the attack isn’t firing at the moment for the Three Lions.
