England U21 v Slovenia U21
Kick Off: Wednesday 18th June at 20:00
Competition: U21 European Championship
England take on Germany in the final game of the EURO U21 group stages. Germany have already qualified for the knockout stages while England still have some work to do to book their place in the last 16 following their 0-0 draw against Slovenia last time out.
There is also a battle going on between these sides to top the group which would theoretically give either an easier draw in the round of 16 which could be crucial in shaping who goes deep in this tournament. Only a win would secure top spot for England while a point would suffice for Germany, so it is possible that we see different approaches by both managers here.
⭐ England U21 v Germany U21 Predictions and Best Bets
There is serious attacking quality on both sides here but Germany have looked the more complete side so far, winning 3-0 against Slovenia in their opening game before seeing off Czechia by a 4-2 scoreline. These seven goals are the most that any side have scored in the competition so far and Antonio si Salvo’s side will feel that England’s backline is susceptible when looking at the chances they’ve given up in their opening few games.
Goals are certainly worth looking at here, England will know that a loss here just opens the door slightly for Slovenia, although goal difference should keep England safe from exiting the tournament altogether. Backing Germany to strike early on here also appears to be quite a promising angle, four of the seven goals they’ve scored in the tournament so far have been scored in the first half.
Both sides should be motivated by the fact that this is essentially a straight shootout between the historic rivals to determine who tops Group B and progresses to the knockout stages with a slightly more favourable draw.
📊 England U21 v Germany U21 Form and Tactics
England were missing the final clinical touch in their 0-0 draw against Slovenia last time out. Lee Carsley’s men had plenty of opportunities with the Three Lions registering 20 shots in total, but only three of these managed to find the target. England also struck the woodwork through Harvey Elliott who was particularly frustrated in the game, managing seven shots but none of these attempts tested the Slovenian keeper.
England will be hoping for a performance against Germany which mirrors their opening game of the tournament which saw England run out 3-1 winners over Czechia. There will still be a slight concern for Lee Carsley that his side are a bit too open at the back, both Czechia and Slovenia had notable chances in their games against England that a more clinical side would be able to take advantage of, especially a side like Germany who are the current top scorers in the tournament with seven goals across their two games.
Germany have probably been the strongest side in the competition so far, securing progression to the knockout stages with two routine wins over Czechia and Slovenia. They’ve scored seven goals across these fixtures which is a firepower that is currently unmatched when compared to the other sides in this competition.
Antonio di Salvo’s side have been relentless and clinical when chances have fallen their way, particularly Nick Woltemade who has already netted four goals in the tournament with his performances catching the eye of sides like Chelsea who are eyeing up a summer move for the unconventional striker. Woltemade can cause England problems here, he will be the toughest test that this England backline has had to contend with so far and his presence could expose the defensive frailties which have seeped through the gaps for England across the opening few games of this tournament.
A slight advantage for England here is that Antonio di Salvo may decide to rotate his side seeing as they have already qualified for the knockout stages of this tournament. With little break between the games, this could be an opportunity for Germany to rest players with the knockout stages expected to be a more challenging task for the Germans.
📊 England U21 v Germany U21 Head-to-Head Key Stats
These sides faced off in the group stages of the 2023 U21 European Championships in a game that ended 2-0 to England. Germany actually finished bottom of their group on that occasion so it was a very different German side to the current squad which has already bettered the achievement of the 2023 side.
